We’re looking for a dedicated Animal Technician to play a vital role within the University’s state-of-the-art animal research facilities. In this exciting opportunity, you’ll help deliver a first-class research support service by ensuring the highest standards of care and welfare for laboratory animals. Experience working in a research environment and with the breeding of genetically modified animals is essential, along with a professional qualification in animal technology. * Extensive experience working with laboratory animals in a dedicated animal facility, with proficiency demonstrated at application and interview.
* Strong knowledge and understanding of animal care, welfare standards, and best practices, assessed at application and interview.
* Completion of the Institute of Animal Technology Level 3 Diploma, assessed at application.
* Proven experience managing breeding colonies of wild type and genetically modified animals, assessed at application and interview.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, assessed at application and interview.
* High standards of hygiene, attention to detail, and a methodical approach to cleanliness, assessed at application and interview.
* Confident IT skills, including experience using colony management databases, assessed at application.
* Strong customer service skills, with a track record of handling phone and email enquiries promptly and professionally, assessed at application.
* Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, researchers, and contractors, assessed at application and interview.
* Self-motivated and organised, with the ability to manage and prioritise personal workload while maintaining a flexible, team-focused approach, assessed at application and interview. Duties and Responsibilities:
* Work collaboratively with Licence Holders and research teams, providing specialist advice on breeding and care strategies to support compliance with legislation and uphold the highest standards of animal welfare.
* Undertake routine animal husbandry tasks, including cleaning, feeding, and watering, with participation in an out-of-hours and weekend rota as required.
* Monitor animal health and wellbeing through regular checks, promptly reporting any concerns to the appropriate personnel.
* Maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards by cleaning cages, pens, and associated areas in line with departmental protocols.
* Manage breeding colonies of wild type and genetically modified animals, ensuring their health and welfare, maintaining accurate records in accordance with Home Office, departmental, and project requirements, and keeping research teams informed.
* Monitor and record environmental conditions in animal rooms, procedure areas, and service spaces, using both paper records and the LabTracks animal management system.
* Ensure full compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, ISO 9001, Health & Safety legislation, and departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
* Assist with a range of laboratory techniques and support regulated and non-regulated procedures, including providing post-operative animal care when required.
* Contribute to sustainability and carbon efficiency initiatives within the department.
* Monitor consumable stock levels, ensuring essential supplies are maintained and replenished proactively.
* Provide information, advice, and assistance to facility users, referring to senior technicians or the line manager where appropriate.
* Carry out additional duties as required, appropriate to the grade and remit of the post
