Advanced Practitioner Strategic Lead – Public Health Permanent Grade: 7 £66,627 – £85,845 (2025) - Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review Working 36.5 hours per week Are you ready to make a tangible difference to health outcomes and inequalities in one of the UK’s largest and most diverse cities? Birmingham City Council is seeking a driven, values‑led and highly skilled professional to join us as an Advanced Practitioner Strategic Lead within our Public Health leadership team. The ideal applicant would be working through their portfolio to specialist registration. About the Role This is a significant opportunity to play a leadership role at a pivotal time for Birmingham. As an Advanced Practitioner Strategic Lead, you will work closely with the Assistant Directors and Director of Public Health, leading a defined portfolio of work that supports our ambition to improve population health, reduce inequalities and embed public health principles across the Council and wider system. You will lead the development, commissioning and delivery of major public health programmes, ensuring they are evidence‑led, equitable and aligned with the Council’s Corporate Plan, City Vision and Health and Wellbeing Strategy. You will be responsible for a portfolio of specialism within Public Health, with flexibility to adapt your portfolio as priorities evolve. As a senior member of the Public Health leadership team, will be critical role in supporting the Director of Public Health to deliver their statutory responsibilities contributing to the implementation of relevant national and local policy and recommendations, ensuring that population health principles are at the heart of transformative work to improve health outcomes and reduce inequalities of the citizens of Birmingham. Alongside delivering outcomes for citizens, you will play an active role in shaping a positive, inclusive and high‑performing culture of the Public Health division, whilst influencing policy and practice, and ensuring public health principles are embedded across the Council and wider system. Key Responsibilities You will: Provide expert public health leadership and advice to senior officers, members and partners. Lead the strategic development and delivery of a defined public health portfolio, improving outcomes and reducing health inequalities. Shape and deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based programmes and commissioned services. Work collaboratively with NHS, local authority, voluntary sector and regional partners to deliver integrated, system‑wide solutions. Use public health intelligence, research and evaluation to inform decision‑making and drive impact. Lead and manage staff and resources effectively, ensuring value for money and robust governance. Contribute to planning for and responding to public health incidents and emergencies, including on‑call arrangements where required. Support the Director of Public Health in delivering statutory responsibilities and organisational priorities. Act as an ambassador for Birmingham City Council at local, regional and national levels. About You We’re looking for a confident, compassionate and credible public health professional who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to lead change and work effectively across complex systems. You will bring: Specialist public health expertise with a strong track record of delivery at a senior Extensive experience of strategic leadership, programme delivery and partnership working. Strong analytical and critical appraisal skills, with the ability to translate evidence into action. Experience of managing people, budgets and complex portfolios in a pressured environment. Excellent influencing and communication skills, with confidence working with elected members and senior stakeholders. A clear commitment to tackling health inequalities and promoting inclusive, community‑led approaches.
