Job summary

This 12-month fixed-term Higher Specialty Resident Doctor fellowship at Worthing Hospital includes a PGCert in Healthcare Leadership and Commissioning from BSMS. The post focuses on leading projects to improve urogynaecology services, including streamlining referral pathways, developing clinical skills in urodynamics, and addressing inappropriate referrals. The fellow will collaborate with primary care teams, physiotherapists, and bladder and bowel nurses to build community hubs for managing pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence.

Key responsibilities include creating educational materials, conducting workshops to clarify referral pathways, and gathering audit data to support BSUG accreditation for UHSx. The fellowship provides a structured framework for skill development and system‑level improvements, with measurable outcomes tracked throughout the year.

The role also emphasizes leadership and educational growth through project work and the PGCert programme. It is 0.6 FTE, with an optional clinical component to maintain and enhance clinical skills.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead a project to enhance the urogynaecology service, collaborating with community teams and allied health professionals. Responsibilities include delivering education and training to trainees and multi‑professional groups, mentoring, supporting quality improvement initiatives, and developing community pelvic health hubs. The role offers insight into medical education infrastructure at Trust and KSS Deanery levels.

Key duties involve scoping and leading projects focused on investigation and diagnosis, stakeholder engagement, progress monitoring, and supporting colleagues. The post holder will participate in meetings and engage with decision‑making processes across leadership, education, and organisational change. They will attend BSMS, regional, and national educational events, liaise with BSMS Programme Team and NHS England Workforce, Training and Education Directorate, and complete a PG Cert in Healthcare Leadership and Commissioning. Knowledge sharing is expected, including presenting a poster to programme sponsors and stakeholders.

The role comprises 60 % project work aimed at service improvement, and 40 % clinical duties including second‑tier on‑call support, outpatient sessions, and departmental operations.

Job responsibilities

Three days non‑clinical 0.6 FTE (60 % full time) for leadership and education fellowship work leading specified project work and participating in the development programme, including attendance at BSMS for the academic modules, Learning Network attendance and personal study.

The days for module attendance vary, but it is asked that Fridays are one of the non‑clinical days, so that all Fellows are available on those days for contact.

The remaining time can be allocated to clinical duties.

Employment details

Post would be based at Worthing Hospital with the expectation of cross‑site collaboration with the urogynaecology team at St Richards Hospital.

Person Specification – Essential and Desirable

* Essential: Basic medical degree, postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification, full GMC Registration with a licence to practice, Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
* Desirable: Higher Degree, additional qualifications, accreditation and courses.
* Clinical Skills and Experience Essential: Relevant experience or interest in urogynaecology, evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
* Knowledge Desirable: Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
* Organisation and Planning Essential: Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams, understanding of NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
* Desirable (Organisation and Planning): Evidence of managerial skills: achievements, course attended.
* Teaching Skills Essential: Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching.
* Desirable (Teaching): Recognised teaching qualification.
* Academic and Research Essential: Evidence of participation in audit.
* Desirable (Research): Research experience, publications, prizes and honours.
* Career Progression Essential: Appropriate progression of career to date.
* Personal Attributes Essential: Evidence of good communication skills both oral and written.
