Morson Talent is working on behalf of a major player within the Energy Sector, currently seeking a Chemical Safety & COSHH Advisor to join an established site-based team in Somerset. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects.
Overview
The Chemical Safety & COSHH Advisor will leverage their expertise to manage chemical hazards on a complex construction site. Responsibilities include identifying potential environmental, occupational health, safety, or fire risks associated with chemicals, supporting risk assessments, mitigation design, and approvals to ensure effective controls. As the project advances, compliance with the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations will be essential. The role also involves supporting contract partners in enhancing their chemical risk assessment capabilities, aiming to improve safety performance across the construction industry.
Framework & Boundaries
You will be part of the Site Environment Team, reporting to the Site Environmental Engineering Lead, and collaborate closely with fire safety, incident response, health, and safety professionals. Building a 'one-team' approach with all stakeholders and external partners, you will ensure clear communication and support, particularly regarding emergency arrangements aligned with current and future risk profiles.
Principal Accountabilities
* Providing support to safety, health, fire, environment, and emergency response teams
* Managing and assuring the site's chemical inventory to ensure regulatory compliance, including REACH and COMAH
* Assessing contractor requests for chemical products, consulting Subject Matter Experts as necessary
* Supporting the implementation of a new chemical management system
* Fostering a Chemical Management Community of Best Practice within the organization
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
* A degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline
* Experience working with chemicals and understanding chemical risk control principles
* Knowledge of relevant regulations and guidance
* Ability to provide strategic and tactical advice to diverse stakeholders
* Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple activities
* A proactive, flexible team player capable of working independently across various issues
Desirable
* Awareness of DSEAR, fire safety, and occupational health
* Experience managing chemical inventories or approved chemical lists
* Experience delivering COSHH awareness, handling, transfer, spill response training
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to prioritize workload to meet team goals
* Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
