Job Description
We are expanding our presence across the water sector, partnering with UK water companies to deliver strategic capital delivery programmes for their AMP8 investment cycles. We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Designer with proven design experience in the water sector at all stages of the project lifecycle to join our growing Engineering & Design Capability supporting our Frameworks.
As a Principal Designer you will be working within our Civil & Structural team, often with minimal supervision. The role requires producing civil and structural CAD design deliverables, including 3D models, technical drawings and sketches for pipeline projects within the water sector. You will also provide guidance and technical mentoring to apprentices within the Costain Engineering business.
A requirement to undertake occasional site visits, attend design reviews and client meetings. Challenge yourself and others to deliver value engineering design solutions. Be an effective, confident communicator with our diverse client portfolio.
This role presents an exciting and challenging opportunity within a growing team of over 130 Civil and Structural Engineers and Designers. Our department engages in a diverse array of projects, spanning from Concept Studies to Detailed Design, offering a variety of interesting work. The industries we cover include Water, Transportation, Energy, Nuclear, and Defence.
You will be based in the Manchester office 2-3 days per week, with the facility to work remotely and with occasional visits to other offices and sites in line with project requirements.
Responsibilities
* Preparing preliminary and detailed designs in 2D/3D for civil and structural, temporary, and permanent works in the Water Sector as requested by Lead Engineers and Lead Designers.
* Use of Aveva E3D/Revit for 3D BIM modelling and 2D drawing extraction and/or Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD for some elements of civils design. Work within a Common Data Environment.
* Ensure that draughting activities are executed within budget and schedule, while maintaining technical integrity.
* Ensure that work is carried out with relevant codes, standards and procedures. Maintain and develop awareness of current relevant codes and standards.
* Implement company, and where applicable client/project policies and procedures. Effectively communicate with other disciplines to ensure that interfaces are clearly defined and correctly designed.
* Liaise with other departments, project personnel, vendors, clients and other stakeholders.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Extensive experience in water/infrastructure sectors at all stages of the project lifecycle.
* Extensive knowledge and experience of the application of multiple CAD/BIM systems for example from AutoDesk, Bentley, Aveva and of Common Data environments such as ACC and Projectwise.
* Good knowledge of design working practices and installation requirements of the discipline across a range of industries.
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Experience with optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
* Experience in leading teams and supporting more junior designers.
* Experience of rail, highways, energy nuclear and defence sectors an advantage.
Essential Qualifications
* Minimum HNC Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent.
* CSCS.
* Eligible for security clearance.
Desirable Qualifications
* IEng or EngTech Professional Qualification from suitable Engineering Institution.
* CCNSG.Recognised Leadership/Management Training.
