About the Role
This is an electrical-based role. Applicants must already hold electrical installation qualifications at a minimum of NVQ level 2, with NVQ level 3 preferred. Competence may be awarded at Level 2 for those who have achieved: C&G 2382 and C&G 2365, an advanced apprenticeship in railway engineering with an electrical E&P bias, courses deemed equivalent (e.g., armed services), or evidence of previous industry experience verified by the Route Head of Asset (E&P) or delegated authority.
Acceptable qualifications also include – but are not limited to:
* City & Guilds – 236 Part 2, 2360, 2330, 2365, 2357, 8202 or 5357 and 2381.
* BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
* EAL Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
Responsibilities
As a technician you will work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway operating safely and smoothly for passenger and freight users. Your day-to-day tasks will include:
* Working on the nuts, bolts, and cables of the electrification system to ensure power is available for trains, signals, and stations.
* Transporting kit across tricky terrain and performing demanding manual work in all weather and conditions.
* Ensuring safety, checking that the team has the required competencies, and challenging risks to maintain strict safety standards.
* Delivering safe work and being a role model for safe working behaviours.
Qualifications & Skills
* Leadership – able to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
* Effective communication – strong communication skills, able to give clear instructions.
* Technical skills – knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques in the discipline applied for.
* Safety – consistently role‑model safe behaviours, can arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solving – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions and keeping up to date with new standards.
* Willingness to learn – continuously develop skills and competencies relevant to the discipline.
* Relevant qualifications – ideally hold NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline or equivalent experience.
Working Conditions
* Shift patterns include days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work in all weathers.
* Pre‑employment checks include drug & alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS, hearing and eyesight examination.
* Driving licence (Category B) required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Applicants must be within a 60‑minute commute of the location.
