St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers a Clinical Neuropsychologist role within Neurorehabilitation, supporting both inpatient and community settings across the Trust.


Clinical Neuropsychologist

An opportunity has arisen to join a well‑established team of clinical neuropsychologists working in Neurorehabilitation within St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Clinical Neuropsychologists are key, highly valued members of the multidisciplinary Neurorehabilitation service. Across the Trust, we employ a team of Clinical Neuropsychologists and Assistant Psychologists who deliver neuropsychology services from acute care to the community.

The successful candidate will hold doctorate level training in clinical psychology, have experience in neuropsychological diagnostic assessment and neurorehabilitation, and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. The post involves input to inpatient neurorehabilitation, outpatient diagnostic assessment, and outpatient cognitive rehabilitation services. You will be part of the Department of Adult Psychological Professions and will benefit from rotating roles within the department’s eight staff group, alongside clinical supervision, continuous professional development and career progression opportunities.


Main duties

* Provide highly specialist neuropsychological and psychological assessments of clients with acquired neurological disorders, including interpretation of tests, self‑report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations, and semi‑structured interviews with clients, family members and other professionals.
* Administer a range of highly specialised neuropsychological and psychometric tests assessing memory, language, visuospatial and executive functions, fine‑motor dexterity and prolonged observations of cognitive, emotional and behavioural states during assessments.
* Formulate and implement plans for formal neuropsychological and psychological treatment and/or management of clients’ neuropsychological and mental health problems, based on evidence‑based conceptual frameworks.
* Implement neuropsychological and psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining provisional hypotheses.
* Evaluate and decide on neurorehabilitation and treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models and complex patient factors.
* Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for clinical decisions, working within professional guidelines and the team’s policies and procedures.
* Provide specialist advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, contributing to diagnosis and treatment planning, and attending team updates and ward rounds.
* Contribute directly and indirectly to a neuropsychological framework of understanding and care benefiting all clients of the service.
* Conduct risk assessment and management for individual clients, advising on neuropsychological and psychological risk aspects.
* Act as care coordinator (Chairperson/Keyworker) where appropriate, initiating planning and review of care plans under the team Goal Planning Procedure.
* Communicate diagnoses, prognosis, assessment, formulation and treatment plans sensitively and monitor progress in multidisciplinary care, managing distressing situations and disclosures.
* Conduct assessments regarding patients’ capacity and ability to consent to investigations, treatment and other legal matters.


Teaching, training and supervision

* Receive regular supervision from a senior Clinical Neuropsychologist and other professional colleagues in accordance with good practice principles.
* Participate in the Departmental Performance Development Review (PDR) process.
* Develop skills in post‑graduate teaching, training and supervision and provide supervision to other MDT staff’s neuropsychological and psychological work.
* Provide clinical placements for trainee clinical psychologists and professional supervision of trainee clinical psychologists and assistant psychologists.
* Contribute to the pre‑ and post‑qualification teaching of clinical psychologists.
* Provide advice, consultation and training to staff working in neurorehabilitation across a range of agencies and settings.
* Organise study days, deliver academic presentations and provide teaching and training to non‑psychologist staff within the service.
* Work towards completing the required qualifications to enter onto the BPS Specialist Register for Practitioner Neuropsychologists.


Management, recruitment, policy and service development

* Contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of department operational policies and services through research, service evaluation and audit.
* Advise service and professional management on neuropsychological and organisational matters as required.
* Manage the workloads of assistant psychologists and trainee clinical psychologists within team/service policies.
* Participate in shortlisting and interviewing of assistant psychologists.
* Collaborate with Service Managers and Head of Department to ensure national target achievement for patient care and service quality.


Research and service evaluation

* Utilise evidence‑based literature and research to support practice.
* Initiate, organise and participate in clinically relevant neuropsychological research and provide research advice to other staff.
* Undertake project management, including audit and service evaluation, to develop service provision.


General duties

* Maintain professional standards through CPD training, supervision and appraisal.
* Develop and articulate best practice in neuropsychology across the service.
* Maintain accurate clinical records, electronic data entry, report writing and professional self‑governance.
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies relating to the client group and mental health.
* Be competent in Microsoft Office and database management.
* Ensure security of departmental equipment and notify Secretary when replenishment is required.


Person Specification


Qualifications and training

* Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including models of neuropsychology, psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Pre‑qualification training in research methodology, staff training or related applied psychology fields.
* Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology and/or Post‑Doctoral Diploma in Clinical Neuropsychology recognised by the BPS.
* Membership of the BPS Division of Neuropsychology or Division of Clinical Psychology.
* Entrance on the BPS Division of Neuropsychology’s Specialist Register for Clinical Neuropsychologists (SCRN).


Experience

* Experience of specialist neuropsychological assessment and treatment across the full range of care settings (outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient).
* Experience working with a wide variety of client groups across the life course, maintaining professionalism when faced with emotive, distressing problems, verbal or physical abuse.
* Demonstrated further specialist training/experience through at least 50 hours of clinical supervision over a minimum of 18 months.
* Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
* Experience applying neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation in varied contexts.


Knowledge

* Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, design and multivariate data analysis within neuropsychology and psychology.
* Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
* Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
* Knowledge of specialised neuropsychological interventions and therapies for complex groups.
* High level knowledge of at least two specialised neuropsychological or psychological therapies.
* Knowledge of legislation relevant to the client group and neuropsychology.


Other

* Ability to teach and train others using varied multimedia materials suitable for public, professional and academic settings.
* Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance.
* Capacity to support and maintain clinical practice when exposed to highly emotive material.
* Experience working within a multicultural framework.

Salary

£64,156 to £71,148 a year (pro‑rata, per annum, including HCAS).
