Principal Flood Modeller – UK (Hybrid)
Join our dynamic and multidisciplinary Water Team as a Principal Flood Modeller in one of our UK offices – whilst also taking advantage of our flexible hybrid working model.
Responsibilities
* Technical Expert: Lead the estimation of flood flows using established methodologies in the Flood Estimations Handbook. Develop and check hydraulic models (using packages such as Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC‑RAS and InfoWorks ICM) to assist the design of flood alleviation schemes, flood risk assessments, river restoration projects or the Environment Agency’s flood maps.
* Deliver: Lead and input into tenders ranging from innovative one‑off projects to multimillion pound framework contracts. Produce and review high‑quality technical reports documenting model build and uncertainties in the model build process. Conceptualise and scope modelling and hydrological approaches, with consideration of the risks and opportunities in each.
* Collaborate: Work closely with our clients and teams of engineers and technical specialists to help our clients deliver a wide range of fluvial, coastal, surface water or drainage flood risk management projects.
* Lead: Mentor staff within the team to support their professional development and build relationships with clients and across other technical disciplines.
* Quality: Keep up‑to‑date with developments in legislation and guidelines that may affect our services. Use AECOM’s project management systems to deliver high‑quality outputs to our clients in line with the agreed programme and budget.
Project Examples
* Nationally Significant Infrastructure schemes where detailed flood modelling is needed to robustly inform the flood risk assessments.
* Great Grid Partnership – enabling the UK’s energy transition; 17 major onshore and offshore projects.
* Environment Agency Mapping and Modelling Framework delivering national, catchment and local scale flood risk mapping and modelling.
* Thames Water Professional Services Framework covering multidisciplinary, engineering and environmental services.
* Severn Trent Water Design Services Framework supporting the construction of major schemes.
* Southern Water Strategic Delivery Partner supporting Kier in the delivery of non‑infrastructure water and wastewater projects.
* Wessex Water Capital Delivery Framework covering projects from optioneering to detailed design, including environmental investigations.
Qualifications & Experience
* Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or another relevant discipline.
* Obtained or near obtaining professional qualification with CIWEM or similar.
* Significant experience in the application of hydraulic modelling software (Flood Modeller and/or TUFLOW) and hydrological assessments using FEH and REFH2.
* Demonstrable knowledge of Environment Agency requirements in preparing flood models for flood risk assessments.
* Strong GIS skills using QGIS, ArcGIS and/or MapInfo.
* Experience of other modelling types and software advantageous, such as flood forecasting modelling or water quality modelling using Mike 11.
* Self‑motivated, able to work autonomously, committed, willing to learn and able to work in a deadline‑driven team environment.
