The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Sports Operations Manager to lead the operational delivery of sport and active wellness facilities across Oxford Brookes University. Reporting to the Head of Operations and Compliance, the postholder will ensure operational excellence, outstanding customer experience and high-quality people management across multiple sites, while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance and service delivery.
About the team
Sport and Active Wellness (SAW) is a newly formed directorate at Oxford Brookes University, bringing together performance sport, participation, wellness and facilities services. SAW plays a central role in delivering an inclusive, high-quality sporting experience for students, staff and the wider community, supporting physical activity at all levels through exceptional facilities, programmes and people.
The role is based at Brookes Sport facilities across the entire sporting estate, the Boathouse and partner sites, with agile working where appropriate. The postholder is expected to be on site for 4 out of 5 shifts per week, aligned with operational needs.
What will I be doing
● Lead the operational management of multiple sports facilities, ensuring excellent customer service and safe, efficient facility operations.
● Line manage Sports Operations Managers and Duty Managers, providing strong leadership, performance management and staff development.
● Oversee facilities management, compliance and health & safety protocols, including risk assessments, COSHH and emergency procedures.
● Manage recruitment, induction and training of operational staff to ensure consistent standards and service quality.
● Ensure accurate reporting and management of incidents, accidents and near misses, liaising with relevant colleagues as required.
● Coordinate rotas, staffing resources and HR-related operational administration across all sites.
● Drive continuous improvement through operational projects, data-led insights and service enhancements.
What skills do I need
● Proven experience managing multi-site sports, leisure or facilities operations in a complex environment.
● Strong people management experience, including line management of managers, recruitment and staff development.
● Comprehensive knowledge of health & safety legislation, risk assessments, COSHH and operational compliance.
● Ability to lead teams across varied shift patterns, including evenings and weekends.
● Excellent communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
● Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple locations.
