Position Overview
We are currently seeking a Principle Ecologist for our client to work on a Project in the Midlands.
Office location: Kingsbury near Birmingham
Responsibilities
* Act as key driver in delivering HS2's Green Corridor, assisting the BBV Ecology Lead with providing technical expertise and guidance on the ecological aspects of asset completion, assurance, handover and hand back of land in accordance with contractual requirements, including HS2 Technical Standards, legislation, policy and best practice guidelines.
* Drive the update and close out of ecological licences and assure the landscape and ecological design against the requirements of the licences and method statements.
* Provide inspiration and technical guidance to the BBV Natural Capital and Lands Teams.
* Produce and assure high quality ecological reports and deliverables.
* Design, implement, monitor and review protected species mitigation.
* Assure design and delivery of habitat creation and enhancement measures, including adaptive management based on monitoring data outcomes.
* Drive initiatives for identification and safeguarding of retained habitats.
* Provide technical assurance of BBV and Subcontractor deliverables and scopes of work.
* Project manage ecological works packages to enable construction or mitigation activities.
* Solve challenges and problems in design and delivery, identifying solutions to ensure smooth delivery of design into the HS2 Green Corridor.
* Develop, assure and implement robust ecological handover documents conforming to HS2, BBV and industry best practice guidelines, policies and working methods.
* Assure that the landscape design on the Landscape Environmental Master Plans (LEMPs) conforms to: Environmental Statement, No Net Loss Database, the Ecology Site Management Plans (ESMPs) and Landscape Maintenance, Management and Monitoring Plans (LMMMPs), ecological licensing requirements.
* Ensure ecology design is appropriate to location by checking hydrology/topography, proposed habitats against local area, managing design challenges and driving problem solving by keeping abreast of mitigation site clashes for built EWC sites and ensuring required mitigation is programmed into design, and ensuring updates to designed sites identified during habitat monitoring are incorporated.
* Lead technical assurance of ecological design ensuring monitoring specified in EcMS is reflected in BBV design, ensuring design related U&A and EMR requirements are incorporated into design, ensuring ESMP stakeholder consultation undertaken.
Qualifications & Experience
* Proven and extensive experience undertaking and implementing design and delivery of ecological mitigation, enhancement and management for construction projects, particularly NSIPs.
* Thorough understanding and experience implementing ecological best practice, standards and guidance.
* Strong project management experience and organisational skills.
* Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
* Ideally educated to degree or masters level in an ecology‑related subject.
* Excellent understanding of ecological legislation for development and HS2.
* Full driver’s licence and flexibility to travel.
* Protected species licence holder desirable; mitigate licence holder desirable.
* Excellent understanding of utilities/construction/engineering operating environment.
* Literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) & GIS.
* Good interpersonal skills and experience overseeing junior personnel.
* Excellent communication skills and solution‑driven attitude when hosting and contributing to meetings.
* CIEEM Membership or meet criteria.
* Experience communicating with Natural England on project species licences.
* Skills in working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome for the project.
* Determination to see tasks through to completion with excellent planning.
