PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £40,100 - £45,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Technology Operations is a part of BBC Technology & Media operations. As the broadcast technology partner for BBC programme teams, Technology Operations is responsible for keeping multi-media output available 24/365 for Sport, News, Events, World Service and Audio & Music.
The Master Control Room (MCR) group within Technology Operations operates and supports control rooms located at BBC sites both in London and Worcestershire, providing a comprehensive monitoring and switching service to the output divisions, as well as playout and assembly of BBC channels, satellite operations services, technical assistance, and advice.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The MCR in Worcestershire is primarily responsible for the provision of satellite up and downlinking facilities to the BBC, and the maintenance of the satellite teleport facilities at a range of BBC sites. Staff in the Worcestershire MCR also remotely operate the MCRs for all of the BBC’s sites in Scotland, supporting TV, Radio and online services throughout BBC Scotland’s numerous sites and also deal with Sport, ensuring feeds are presented in the desired format for Sport programming from Salford.
In this role you would be undertake a wide variety of technical operations, support and maintenance, as part of a supportive and inclusive team.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
As an MCR Engineer you will be responsible for delivering a high quality operational and technical support service on behalf of BBC. Responsibilities include:
• Pre Transmission Line Up (PTLU) of BBC leased satellite space, to ensure space segment usage complies with the required standards set out by the satellite owners, and that the vision and audio sent via the satellite links are working correctly before being handed off to the relevant production departments.
• Maintenance & Fault Finding: Carrying out Preventative Maintenance on the satellite antenna systems and associated broadcast infrastructure. Responding appropriately to equipment faults, putting in place appropriate fixes, and escalating where necessary to System Specialists.
• Monitoring: Carrying out reactive and proactive monitoring of programme output leaving the MCR. Responding to alarms indicating potential issues with output integrity, or fault conditions with broadcast infrastructure, and investigate appropriately. Accurately logging all output-affecting incidents, escalating to Duty Operations Managers or editorial staff as appropriate.
• Distribution: Ensuring the satellite distribution systems are monitored for issues and maintained to the correct standards. Participate in tests of the backup systems to ensure both staff and equipment are ready when needed.
• Projects: Carrying out small projects to improve the department’s operations or systems, and acting as a project liaison to larger teams bringing in new services.
• Disaster Recovery: Implement DR plans working in close co-operation with MCR Team Leaders, Duty Operations Managers, and World Service editorial staff.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
• Experience working within an MCR or live broadcasting environment, or demonstrable relevant experience working in a radio or television production gallery or transmission environment
• Demonstrable experience of outstanding and adaptable communication skills, for example working with colleagues around the globe, for whom English is sometimes a second or third language or explaining technical issues to non-technical colleagues.
• Demonstrable attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities, for example dealing with technical information in a pressured environment.
• Good working knowledge of audio and video engineering principles
• ‘Safety first’ attitude; able to follow and adhere to safe systems of work at all times
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
• Experience of logging and managing incidents in an operational environment.
• Familiarity with using a range of diagnostic and monitoring tools.
• Able to create supporting documentation and share knowledge with team members.
• NVQ Level 5 or above in a relevant technical discipline.
• Problem solving methodologies.
• Experience in media and creative environments.
• Knowledge of best practice in IT security policies, standards and procedures.
