Operational Manager – Youth Justice Service – Croydon Council
Permanent – 36 hours per week
Job Purpose
The Operational Manager is responsible for developing and managing a multi-agency team to deliver youth justice services, meeting the objectives of the Youth Justice Plan and statutory requirements under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. The role covers statutory responsibilities for children who offend, including leading on Court, Probation (transitions), and Custody. The manager will oversee daily operational activities to prevent and reduce re-offending, improve outcomes for children in the criminal justice system, and ensure victims are involved appropriately. The role involves ensuring timely and suitable responses to referrals, prioritizing cases by urgency and need, and providing leadership, management, and motivation to staff through supervision, professional support, and guidance.
About You
We seek an experienced, qualified professional with knowledge and experience in youth justice services or working with young people. The role suits social work qualified professionals or police officers. Candidates should have current knowledge of practice and service development issues related to young offenders and their families, understanding of the causes of crime, methods to reduce offending, restorative approaches, and victim support. The successful candidate will demonstrate:
1. Ability to lead and manage operational areas dealing with high risk and complexity, ensuring effective risk and vulnerability management and positive outcomes.
2. Relevant management experience in social care, criminal justice, or community safety fields.
3. Ability to organize and implement effective practices within a multidisciplinary team.
4. Substantial practitioner experience in the Youth Justice System, including supervising staff, students, or trainees, and promoting professional development.
5. Strong assessment skills for safety and safeguarding work.
