Job Title: School Caretaker

Hours: 38 Hours Per Week (Can be split across Early/Day/Late Shifts)
Pay Rate: £15.00 to £18.00 Per Hour (Negotiable based on relevant experience and PAY TYPE)
Our client, an established and leading Construction and FM contractor, is looking for a Caretaker to support daily operations of school facilities in the Birmingham and surrounding area, managing cleaning, maintenance and repair needs.
Acting as liaison between school staff (including Head Teachers & Business Managers) and the wider Facilities Management team, the role helps ensure a safe, efficient, and productive environment for all school users.
Responsibilities
* Opening and closing + securing the site and buildings, carrying out minor repairs, monitoring subcontractors to ensure compliance with health and safety policies.
* Managing cleaning standards; cleaning subcontractors are employed and complete the majority of cleaning work on site.
* Maintaining external areas, performing routine health and safety checks, ensuring compliance with relevant quality and environmental standards.
* Flexibility to work across multiple schools in the Birmingham and surrounding area, including occasional overtime/out-of-hours duties.
* Daily duties include liaising with school staff and subcontractors to ensure smooth running of the premises.
* Opening and closing premises, depending on allocated shift (early/day/afternoon).
* Carrying out minor repairs, including mechanical, electrical and general building maintenance.
* Maintaining functional heating, lighting, and domestic hot water systems on site.
* Planning and coordinating daily activities, updating Facilities Management helpdesk systems to log workload.
* Basic IT use including updating Microsoft Office files, reporting and logging documentation.
* Ensuring Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental standards are upheld across the premises.
* Carrying out minor health and safety checks and completing associated paperwork.
* Monitoring cleaning work carried out by cleaning contractors and performing non-routine reactive cleaning as required (e.g., toilet cleaning and fluid spills).
* Ensuring a safe and tidy environment, particularly during periods of severe weather.
Qualifications & Candidate Profile
* Experience in a similar role, with capability to perform Caretaker and General Handyperson / Janitorial duties, including mechanical, electrical and general building maintenance and repair.
* Hold a valid DBS Certificate.
* GCSEs in Maths and English, or equivalent (desired).
* Flexible team player, able to ensure opening/closing of premises and work split shifts as required.
* Ability to monitor and manage subcontractors on site.
* Comfortable liaising with school staff and stakeholders to ensure safe operations and to plan/co-ordinate work required.
* Good basic knowledge of HSQE, with ability to update IT systems and paperwork accordingly.
* Willingness to complete ad-hoc duties, including occasional out-of-hours work.
* Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
