Overview

Job Title: Teacher - Post-Primary

Reports to: Principal


Professional Duties of a Teacher

As a teacher (non-principal) you shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including planning, teaching, assessing, reporting and contributing to the development of the curriculum, under the reasonable direction of the principal and/or the employing authority as applicable.


Responsibilities

* Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
* Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils; providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, future education and careers; making relevant records and reports.
* Maintaining records and reporting on personal and social needs of pupils; communicating with parents; liaising with persons or bodies outside the school as approved; participating in relevant meetings.
* Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for individual pupils and groups of pupils.
* Participating in staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes; pursuing further training and development; advising on course development, teaching materials, programmes, methods and pastoral arrangements.
* Maintaining good order and discipline; safeguarding health and safety; participating in curriculum, pastoral and school administration meetings.
* Assisting in preparation for public examinations and supervising examinations as required.
* Contributing to the management of staff and school activities; coordinating or managing the work of other teachers; participating in curriculum and pastoral activities; administrative tasks related to duties.
* Understanding and complying with working hours, breaks, and day counts as specified; ensuring compliance with school and board terms and conditions.
* Participating in staff cover as needed within the constraints described for pupil supervision in absence of a teacher.
* Promoting good relations and equality of opportunity in line with statutory duties.


Terms and Conditions / Legal Notices

This job description is subject to review in light of changing circumstances and should be regarded as a guideline within which the individual works. Other duties of similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time. In accordance with the Northern Ireland Act (1998), the post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and pay due regard to equality legislation at all times.


Public Examinations and Administration

Participation in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils for such examinations; recording and reporting assessments; and supervising during examinations.


Hours and Staff Cover

Full-time teachers shall be available for 195 days per year, with a maximum of 190 days in a classroom setting. Duties may be specified by the Principal or Board; weekly hours and breaks as defined by policy; mid-day supervision excluded unless contractually required. The year and week definitions follow statutory dates.

Schools may require staff to provide cover for absent colleagues within policy limits.
