Position Overview: This role will be instrumental in designing and executing our supply chain strategy, while ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with the operational needs of the business. The Head of Procurement will play a key role in optimising the supply chain operations to support business growth.
Key responsibilities:
Strategic Procurement & Planning
- Develop, deliver and execute procurement strategies that support operations and continuous company growth.
- Align procurement plans with seasonal demand, project timelines, and fleet expansion goals.
- Lead cost-reduction initiatives while maintaining equipment quality and availability.
- Oversee day-to-day purchasing and contract management.
Supplier & Vendor Management
- Source and negotiate with suppliers of machinery, tools, spare parts, and consumables.
- Negotiate major CapEx purchases and leasing arrangements.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with OEMs, distributors, and service providers.
- Monitor supplier performance using KPIs such as delivery reliability, equipment uptime, and service quality.
Inventory Oversight
- Collaborate with operations managers to develop accurate demand forecasts and ensure material availability.
- Integrate forecasting into procurement and stock planning systems to support operational continuity.
- Manage procurement of high-value assets (e.g., excavators, loaders, access platforms) and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Oversee inventory levels of parts and consumables to support maintenance and reduce downtime.
Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead a procurement team and foster a culture of accountability, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with finance, logistics, and operations to align procurement with business needs, forecasts and budget constraints.
- Provide regular reporting and insights to senior management on procurement performance and opportunities.
Risk, Compliance & Sustainability
- Ensure all procurement activities comply with industry regulations, health & safety standards, and company policies.
- Mitigate risks related to supply chain disruptions, equipment availability, and price volatility.
- Promote sustainable procurement practices, including energy-efficient equipment and responsible sourcing.
Technology & Process Improvement
- Implement and manage procurement systems (e.g., ERP, asset management platforms) to streamline operations.
- Use data analytics to forecast demand, track spend, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Drive digital transformation in procurement processes, including e-sourcing and automated approvals.
Person specification:
Essential
- Degree in Procurement, Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field.
- Proven experience in procurement leadership within the equipment hire, or related industries.
- Hands-on experience in establishing scalable supply chain processes, teams, and systems within fast-paced, high-growth environments.
- Strong understanding of supply chain management, contract negotiation, and vendor performance management.
- Familiarity with construction equipment types, lifecycle costs, and maintenance requirements.
- Excellent negotiation and commercial acumen.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make strategic decisions.
- Effective leadership and team management capabilities.
- Proficient in procurement systems (e.g., ERP, asset management platforms).
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
- High level of integrity and professionalism.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Results-driven with a continuous improvement mindset.
Desirable
- MCIPS (Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply) or working towards
- Experience in digital transformation or automation of procurement processes.
- Knowledge of sustainability practices in equipment sourcing.
- Experience with fleet management or asset-heavy operations.
- Familiarity with UK construction regulations and health & safety standards.
