About the Royal Television Society
Originally founded as the Television Society in 1927 with the birth of broadcast engineering, the Society was granted its Royal title in 1966 and His Majesty King Charles III became Patron of the RTS in 1997.
As an educational charity, the Society's core objectives are to promote the art and science of television – in its broadest sense.
Each year, the RTS offers Television Production and Technology bursaries to help those from less affluent backgrounds get a foothold in the industry, and Masterclass sessions bring together students, academics and industry heads. Since the first RTS Bursary Scheme was launched in 2013, the Society has supported nearly 400 students from lower income backgrounds, with 82% of graduates securing employment within TV and related industries.
The RTS recently launched a unique and innovative CPD-accredited Mini MBA in Television and Streaming Media. Delivered online and self-paced through an interactive learning management system, the pioneering industry-led course provides over 80 hours of learning, case studies and inside business knowledge to current and future industry leaders.
Other core activities include:
* An annual agenda-setting autumn Convention where global media and technology leaders as well as government ministers gather together in Cambridge or London Conventions to consider the key issues impacting our industries:
* Annual Television Journalism, Programme, Craft & Design and Student Television Awards celebrating outstanding achievements across the industry
* A programme of events throughout the year which consider every aspect of the industry: from practical discussions to behind-the-scenes insights into hit shows
* RTS Futures events and the UK's premier TV careers fair aimed at entry-level talent
* Student Masterclasses delivered by leading industry practitioners
14 regional and national groups curate lively events and awards around the UK and Ireland, from Glasgow to Galway with each Centre Committee chaired and directed by local volunteers.
Alongside the RTS's engaged community of around 4000 full members, the Society is supported by UK and global broadcasters, streamers, producers and consultants, including Principal Patrons BBC, Sky, Channel 4 and ITV.
The RTS is committed to representing modern Britain in terms of race, gender and geography across all its activities.
