Overview

Maintenance Assistant (Shifts) at CHoICE Facilities Services, supporting the maintenance and repair of engineering/building systems, equipment and components at NHS/Health buildings managed by CHoICE Facilities Services, 365 days per annum. Operating under a rolling shift pattern covering between 07:30 – 22:00, 7 days per week. The role requires you to support various trade staff in day-to-day activities and undertake non-complex repairs and planned maintenance tasks to help CHoICE achieve and deliver its statutory, mandatory and best practice commitments to its existing partners.

You will have a building/engineering background and be able to demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge gained from working in an industry-related role for several years, with several short industry-related formal qualifications. The role involves supporting the maintenance of large-scale systems typically found within a large Acute NHS Trust, including general power systems, lighting (including emergency lighting), nurse call systems, hot and cold water systems, drainage systems, ventilation systems, steam systems, heating systems and medical gas systems.

The role may require participation in the winter measures on-call rota, for which appropriate payments will be made.


Main duties of the job

You must have a positive, friendly and co-operative manner and be prepared to be flexible to meet the service needs of the Trust. You will use your own initiative to undertake a range of non-complex problem-solving scenarios to achieve satisfactory outcomes while adapting to changing demands of the role.

As well as completing a range of non-complex planned maintenance activities, you will assist all Engineering & Building Trades staff in their day-to-day activities to undertake installation, commissioning, maintenance, service and repair of all engineering and building-related fabric, equipment and installations at CHoICE properties. The role may also include completing minor defects and maintenance tasks linked to building and engineering works and participating in the rolling Maintenance Assistant shift pattern.

Requirements

A full UK driving licence is essential for this post. You will be required to drive/operate CHoICE vehicles and machinery (e.g., vans, tractors, forklift, MEWPs). Full training will be provided for specialist equipment.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification


Experience

* Experience of maintaining or installing Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing or Building systems/equipment typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust
* Experience of hospital working
* Experience of working with the public
* Experience of working at heights
* Experience of working in confined spaces


Skills and Knowledge

* A awareness of relevant Engineering/Building requirements and current regulations
* Knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing or Building systems/equipment typical of a large NHS Acute Trust
* Basic IT Skills
* Ability to cascade information to internal and external customers
* Ability to manage and work to deadlines
* Engineering/building aptitude with willingness to learn new skills and demonstrate suitable experience to fulfil the post requirements
* Use and manipulation of power and hand tools
* Ability to assess options and select the most appropriate approach or defer work as needed


Physical Skills

* Must have a valid UK driving license and be willing to use CHoICE vehicles and travel to CHoICE managed sites
* Ability to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods
* Ability to undertake tasks requiring short bursts of intensive effort before returning to moderate physical activity
* Regular moving and handling activities
* Highly developed physical dexterity for hand-eye coordination


Qualifications

* Basic Numeracy & Literacy Skills to Level 1 or equivalent
* Certificates to support experience gained in the industry
* Formal completion of a role-relatable Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience
* NVQ Level 2 in Engineering
* Recognised approved Water Jetting Association Accredited training
