Learning Support Assistant Location: Peterlee Contract Type: Long term, Immediate start date About the Role A well-established and highly regarded specialist school providing education and care for children and young people aged 2 to 19 years old. The school supports pupils with a diverse range of special educational needs, including complex learning difficulties, autism spectrum conditions, communication needs, social, emotional and mental health needs, and physical disabilities. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to join the supportive and experienced team. Key Responsibilities Provide 1:1 and small group support tailored to individual learning plans. Assist in the delivery of differentiated learning activities across a broad curriculum. Help monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teaching staff. Promote independence and encourage positive learning behaviours. Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils. Support pupils in developing communication, social, and life skills. Assist in implementing behaviour support strategies in line with school policies. Provide emotional reassurance and promote a safe and nurturing learning environment. Person Specification Essential Experience working with children or young people, ideally within a special educational needs setting. Understanding of a range of additional needs and inclusive practices. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Desirable Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant or equivalent). Experience supporting pupils with autism, complex needs, or communication difficulties. Knowledge of alternative communication methods (e.g., PECS, Makaton). Training in safeguarding, first aid, or behaviour support strategies.
