Overview

Job summary
An exciting position within the specialism of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) has become available within East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust. You will deliver patient‑centred advice, support and care for in‑patients with IBD, their families and carers, across East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust sites. In line with the National Service Framework (NSF) and NICE guidelines you will provide advanced assessment of patient needs and advise on appropriate IBD management, actively working to minimise length of stay during the inpatient period.

You will empower patients with the skills and knowledge necessary for independence in self‑management. Working as an advanced practitioner you will maintain and update your own knowledge and skills and provide evidence to support this.

Responsibilities

* Raise awareness and improve standards of IBD care by developing, planning and implementing specialist education and training for clinical colleagues, patients and their families/carers, in an appropriate format and language.
* Work collaboratively with other health care professionals to develop a holistic support network for people with IBD within the Trust, Specialist Units and primary care.
* Assist and develop virtual methods of care including virtual biologic clinics and web‑based care.
* Develop new patient pathways to meet IBDQIP, IBD Audits and IBD Biologic audits.
* Provide an evidence‑based proactive nursing service responsive to patient needs, reflecting local protocols and national guidelines, delivered through face‑to‑face and virtual consultations.
* Act as an autonomous practitioner at an advanced level within IBD guidance, Trust policies and NMC code.


About us

* Adhere to child protection and vulnerable adult legislation within own practice and service.
* Perform health assessments, obtain clinical histories, conduct examinations and provide expert advice to patients, families and other health care professionals.
* Work clinically for a minimum of 80% of the role.
* As a nurse prescriber demonstrate advanced knowledge of and experience in drugs used to manage IBD; provide advice on stabilisation of patients on oral agents and injected therapies according to local guidelines.
* Support ward areas and bedded sites with management of IBD in collaboration with Consultant Gastroenterologists.

Job responsibilities

* Utilise complex communication skills to educate patients who may have Learning Disabilities or Mental Health conditions, with liaison to clinical experts to develop educational packages.
* Maintain accurate patient records and update electronic systems (e.g., Cerner).
* Explore empowerment/counselling skills to assist patients in attaining self‑management goals as part of their management plan.
* Understand national, strategic and local guidelines underpinning chronic disease management in IBD (NICE, NSF).


Education and Training

* Maintain professional development per NMC Code; network with colleagues locally, nationally and internationally; attend courses and conferences as appropriate.
* Stay current with IBD developments and NHS changes; deliver in‑service training to all staff levels; work with Consultant Gastroenterologists and stakeholders.
* Act as an expert educational resource across inpatient care, GP practices and community nurses; support students and staff on secondment or placement.
* Lead multidisciplinary IBDS meetings; provide information on self‑management strategies and adherence; implement daily inpatient IBD input in the ward setting.
* Demonstrate governance and risk management understanding; identify CPD needs for staff; provide reports to senior management as required.


Management and Leadership

* Develop and monitor services to meet local needs; manage own caseload.
* Handle incidents and complaints per trust policy; coordinate departmental rotas and study days; mentor junior staff.
* Contribute to clinical governance; participate in policy development for bedded IBD services; lead staff training and CPD; promote evidence‑based practice.
* Collaborate with MDTs to update policies and guidelines; assist in designing, implementing and evaluating education programmes for staff inside and outside the Trust; mentor designated personnel.


Audit and Research

* Participate in and initiate research projects where appropriate; publish findings and share best practice.
* Participate in departmental audits of clinical activity and caseloads; monitor against NICE standards for IBD; contribute to regional and national audits and research recruitment with GI team.


Qualifications and Experience

* Essential: Diploma in Nursing, NMC Registration, and non‑medical prescriber or willingness to work towards this.
* Desirable: Degree level study; multidisciplinary working experience; genuine interest in IBD; teaching experience; previous Band 6 or specialist work.

* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required; post subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and DBS submission.
