Purpose of the role To assist with the upkeep, safety, and functionality of the hostel’s physical environment, helping ensure it remains a clean, safe, and welcoming space for guests and staff. Main Responsibilities General Maintenance: Carry out basic repairs and maintenance tasks such as fixing door handles, changing light bulbs, or assembling furniture. Safety Checks: Support staff in identifying and reporting potential hazards, and assist with routine safety inspections (e.g. fire exits, trip hazards). Cleaning & Tidying: Help maintain communal areas, outdoor spaces, and storage areas to ensure they are clean, safe, and well-organised. Support with Deliveries & Storage: Assist with moving supplies, organising donations, and keeping storage areas accessible and tidy. Collaboration with Staff: Work alongside hostel staff to prioritise tasks and respond to urgent maintenance needs. Respectful Engagement: Interact respectfully with guests, maintaining appropriate boundaries and contributing to a calm and supportive environment. Skills, experience and attitude needed Practical DIY or maintenance skills Awareness of safety and safeguarding practices or willingness to learn Reliability and good timekeeping Ability to work independently and as part of a team Respectful and non-judgmental attitude Willingness to follow hostel procedures
