Purpose of the job
We are looking for someone with extensive knowledge and practical application of mechanical engineering within highly regulated industry sectors.
The Senior Engineer defines and distributes the scope of work and ensures that the project is executed safely, on time and at appropriate levels of quality and is responsible for the delivery of engineering to meet the requirements technical specification.
In addition to project specific responsibilities, the Senior Engineer will also have responsibilities including the supervision of less experienced engineering employees, input into engineering resource management, recruitment and tendering support.
Reporting to
Principal Engineer or the Project Engineering Manager / Nominated Engineer depending on the complexity of the project assignment.
Key Accountabilities
1. Delivery of mechanical engineering scope to satisfy the technical specification
2. Potential to lead teams for the full project lifecycle, including Specification, Design, Procurement, Supply/Manufacture Liaison, Installation, Acceptance Testing
3. Commissioning and Operator Training in Nuclear Engineering Projects
4. Production of and approval of deliverables throughout the delivery process
5. Checking/approval of discipline specific engineering deliverables
6. Contribution to engineering and safety reviews
7. Ensuring quality and prompt delivery of documentation throughout all phases of the project lifecycle
8. Compliance with safety legislation and statutory regulations
9. Develop cost effective technical solutions
10. Staff development
11. Managing safety by developing and reinforcing the safety culture
12. Management of contractors
13. Provide technical consultancy
Duties and Requirements:
Essential for a Senior Mechanical Engineer
14. Strong understanding of the fundamentals within your engineering discipline
15. Previous experience of working within the nuclear industry (this is desirable but not essential if transferrable skills are demonstrated)
16. Proven track record of successfully delivering mechanical engineering solutions within a highly regulated industry
17. Working knowledge of plant layout, set up, installation and alignment of plant, equipment and machinery for works test, integrated test, site installation and commissioning
18. Understanding of the requirements to support safety led designs and associated regulatory compliance
19. Good understanding of wider industry safety legislation and statutory regulations
20. Understanding of modern delivery practices, for example BIM compliance, RIBA/BSRIA design delivery stage gates, etc
21. Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
22. Good level of commercial awareness
23. Experience of leading design teams
24. Experience of managing sub-contracts
Desirable Senior Mechanical Engineer
25. Full membership of a discipline specific engineering institution
26. A full UK driving licence
27. Experience of bid preparation
28. An understanding of Nuclear Industry Design Substantiation
