Job Overview
A Radiography Department Assistant role within the Radiology Department at Whiston Hospital, covering a 7‑day imaging service. The post requires support of qualified staff during radiographic, CT and MRI procedures, patient care, intravenous cannulation and clerical duties.
Main Duties
* Assist radiology clinical staff in all imaging examinations.
* Support the radiology clinical staff in maintaining high standards of care.
* Accept responsibility for delegated functions within the imaging department as directed by a qualified practitioner.
* Assist patients throughout their imaging attendance.
* Prepare imaging rooms and trolleys for clinical examinations.
* Preparation of intravenous and oral contrast according to departmental protocol.
* Insertion of intra‑venous cannulation prior to imaging examinations.
* Assist in cross‑sectional imaging by positioning patients, placing MR coils, and loading injector with contrast.
* Coordinate inpatient transfer to and from radiology for all modalities, including liaising with wards, organising portering staff and monitoring patient waiting times.
* Clean clinical equipment that may have come into contact with body fluids.
* Assist in providing a safe, infection‑free patient experience.
* Undertake household support tasks.
* Report equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
* Maintain effective communication with patients during procedures, using tact and encouragement.
* Maintain a courteous manner in all communication with patients and staff.
Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
* Ensure adherence to all departmental and trust SOPs and policies.
* Maintain the privacy and dignity of patients.
Administrative Responsibilities
* Accurate data entry into the Radiology Information System.
* Ensure data quality, keeping patient details current.
Teaching & Training Responsibilities
* Assist in the induction of new radiography helpers.
* Attend relevant training courses.
* Maintain personal development.
Research & Audit
* Participate in departmental audit and research programmes.
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 in care or equivalent qualification/experience in radiology.
* GCSE English and Maths at grade 9–4 (A*–C).
Knowledge & Experience
* Previous care work in a health care setting.
Skills
* Highly self‑motivated and able to use own initiative.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to manage difficult or sensitive situations.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Good understanding of trust policies.
Other Requirements
* Ability to travel to various hospital locations by own car or assisted driver.
* Willingness to work the required hours and duties.
* Compliance with trust policies and procedures.
* Understanding of the confidential nature of the role and awareness of the Data Protection Act.
