About St Luke's Hospice

St Luke's Hospice is a local charity providing compassionate care to people whose illnesses are no longer curable. We promote dignity in dying and empower people to make the choices they want, from the moment they are diagnosed.


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Inpatient Unit Sister to join our team serving the Basildon and Thurrock area. This senior clinical role will lead the inpatient unit, providing high-quality nursing care, clinical leadership and operational oversight. The successful candidate will support a skilled multidisciplinary team to ensure person-centred care that reflects the Hospice’s values.

Salary: £32,632.13 to £41,563.99 per year (depending on experience and qualifications)

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (including shift work, weekends and occasional on-call responsibilities as required)

Location: Basildon/Thurrock inpatient unit


Main Responsibilities

* Provide visible clinical leadership for the inpatient unit, ensuring safe, effective and compassionate nursing care in line with Hospice policies and professional standards.
* Manage and lead the nursing team, including recruitment, rostering, performance management, supervision and development.
* Ensure high standards of clinical governance, risk management and infection prevention and control are maintained across the unit.
* Oversee assessment, care planning and delivery of palliative and end-of-life care, ensuring care is person-centred and responsive to individual needs.
* Work collaboratively with medical, therapy and allied health professionals to coordinate care and optimise patient outcomes.
* Support the implementation and evaluation of clinical policies, guidelines and audit activity to drive continuous improvement.
* Maintain accurate records, manage medication safety and ensure adherence to safeguarding and consent processes.
* Contribute to the development of training and learning opportunities for the team and support a culture of reflective practice.


Key Skills and Experience

* Registered Nurse on the NMC register with current registration.
* Significant post-registration experience in palliative care or relevant clinical setting, with proven leadership experience.
* Experience of managing teams, rostering and supporting staff development.
* Sound knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, safeguarding and medication administration.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage patients, families and staff sensitively.
* Ability to manage competing priorities, make informed clinical decisions and elevate concerns appropriately.
* Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to promoting a positive culture within the team.
