About the Role
To provide a comprehensive, hands‑on HR and payroll service supporting staff, ensuring that people processes run smoothly, fairly, and compliantly. The role is responsible for all day‑to‑day HR operations, supporting managers across the business with employee relations, absence, disciplinary and performance issues, while maintaining accurate payroll and HR records for a diverse workforce.
Salary dependent on experience.
Your Responsibilities
HR
* Act as the first point of contact for all HR‑related queries across the site, providing practical, legally compliant advice and guidance to managers and employees.
* Manage the full employee lifecycle from recruitment and onboarding to exit, ensuring all documentation, right‑to‑work checks, and personnel records are accurate and up to date.
* Support managers with disciplinary, grievance, absence and performance matters — advising on procedure, preparing documentation, and attending meetings where required.
* Coordinate and monitor probationary reviews, performance appraisals, and capability processes, ensuring consistency and fairness across departments.
* Maintain HR systems for attendance, holidays, training and performance records, ensuring accurate data for reporting and payroll.
* Support a culturally and linguistically diverse workforce, ensuring communication and documentation are accessible and clearly understood.
* Assist with the development and communication of company policies, training programmes, and staff handbooks (including the Driver Handbook).
* Work closely with the H&S Manager to align HR and safety processes, particularly around PPE compliance, training, and incident investigations.
Payroll
* Process weekly payroll accurately and on time for all hourly paid employees, including adjustments for overtime, holidays, sickness, and other absence.
* Ensure all payroll calculations comply with current legislation, company policy, and HMRC requirements.
* Manage time and attendance data, ensuring clocking accuracy and investigating discrepancies before payroll submission.
* Prepare and issue payslips, P45s, and other payroll documentation as required.
* Respond promptly to pay‑related queries from employees and managers.
Projects/General Admin
* Maintain accurate employee files and digital records in line with GDPR and company policy.
* Assist in the implementation of new HR and payroll systems or processes (e.g. transitioning from IRIS Earnie to Staffology/Chronicle).
* Contribute to site communication and engagement initiatives, including toolbox talks, training sessions, and policy rollouts.
* Development of management training
What We’re Looking For
* CIPD Level 5 or above
* Strong working knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
* Confident communicator, able to build trust and credibility with both Directors and managers, down to site staff.
* Comfortable handling sensitive employee relations issues and balancing fairness with operational needs.
* Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and take initiative.
* Cultural awareness and sensitivity when working with a multi‑national workforce.
* Knowledge of payroll processes is desirable but not essential. Full on‑the‑job training will be provided.
