Sustainability-Focused Packaging Development Scientist, 12 month FTC
This is a fully onsite role based at our customer's site in Ware, UK for an initial 12 month fixed term contract.

Job Purpose
The Sustainability-Focused Packaging Development Scientist is responsible for delivering technical, quality, and sustainability assessments of innovative packaging materials and container closure systems. The role supports the development, evaluation, and implementation of PVC-free blister materials, sustainable packaging designs, and sustainability footprint assessments across oral solid dose and sterile drug products.
This position provides hands-on experimental, analytical, and cross-functional support to various teams to ensure packaging solutions meet agreed design briefs, regulatory standards, and sustainability objective.
Responsibilities
Lead the technical and quality evaluation of PVC-free blister base and lidding materials, supporting material selection, testing, reporting, and technology transfer to manufacturing sites.
Conduct sample preparation, Seal integrity testing, Push-through force testing and visual inspections of materials and laise with external vendors on outsourced testing
Assess and develop innovative, sustainability-focused packaging designs for oral and sterile products, applying experimental testing and modelling tools
Conduct packaging sustainability evaluations using the Product Footprint Calculation Tool (PFCT), calculating carbon impacts and supporting project teams in making data-driven decisions.
Ensure accurate experimental documentation, regulatory and quality compliance, and provide technical support across development, stability, and packaging activities.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
Bachelor's or Master's degree in a scientific disciple such as Packaging Science, Materials Science, Sustainability, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related fields
Experience
Practical laboratory experience is essential
Experience with experimental design and technical reporting required
Experience/Key interest in Sustainability is highly preferred
Relevant experience in a similar role is advantageous including experience with carbon footprint assessments or sustainability metric
Skills/Competencies

Ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver against project timelines
High attention to detail and documentation rigor
Proactive and flexible mindset
