You will be working as a Senior Clinical Fellow within an established Middle Grade tier, ably supported by a dynamic Consultant body.

* Provide shop floor supervision and patient care as a Senior Clinical Fellow at registrar level within the Emergency Department; ensure rapid assessment and management of patients in A&E.
* Participate in the department’s supervision, teaching and development activities; support 24-hour ED cover and contribute to the ED controller, Resuscitation lead and STARR roles as applicable.
* Engage with ongoing professional development; maintain or obtain certificates in ATLS, APLS and ALS where applicable.

* Willingness to participate in 24-hour rota and out-of-hours work as part of the department’s shift pattern.
* Commitment to teaching, supervision and professional development; support for colleagues and junior staff.

About the post and the department

This post is for a senior clinical fellow at registrar level to work in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Watford General Hospital. The role provides supervision and direct patient care alongside other middle grades, under a Consultant team. There is Consultant presence on the shop floor for 16 hours (8 am to midnight), 7 days a week, with additional senior roles including ED controller, Resuscitation lead and STARR to ensure early assessment by a senior decision maker and strong oversight of the ED. The middle grade doctors rotate into these roles as senior clinical decision makers.

The Consultants are committed to teaching and supporting professional development opportunities. The post holder will be encouraged to obtain or have completed certificates in ATLS, APLS and ALS. Two Clinical Educators have recently been appointed in HEE-supported posts to provide additional clinical teaching availability.

Working pattern and benefits

The rota provides full shift pattern with 24-hour ED cover and 1:3 weekends. The post holder will contribute to senior EM cover 24 hours a day and may perform mainly out-of-hours clinical work as negotiated. We emphasise staff wellbeing, flexible working options and opportunities for professional development. We are building on the success of our award-winning virtual hospital and ongoing digital healthcare initiatives.

We offer flexible working options to support work-life balance. For more information on flexible working, please refer to the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust site (the URL is provided for reference only in this description).

Equity and support

We are actively pursuing equal opportunities. If you have a disability or long-term health condition and require support or guidance, please contact westherts.recruitment@nhs.net. If you are a Service Leaver, Veteran, Military Reserve, Cadet Force Adult Volunteer, or partner/spouse of those serving, please tick “Member of the Armed Forces Community” on the application form.

Application and timeline

If you do not hear back within 3 weeks of your application, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion. The main service commitment of Clinical Fellows is to provide shop floor support and supervision to FY2s and Nurse Practitioners and to undertake direct patient care alongside other middle grades, supervised by the Consultants. This advert closes on Thursday 25 Sep 2025.
