Job Title: Vocational Tutor (DT / Hairdressing / Hair & Beauty)
Location: Bishopton PRU
Contract Type: Part-time, ongoing
Working Hours: Afternoons only, up to five afternoons per week (Monday–Friday)
Role Overview
Bishopton PRU is seeking qualified Vocational Tutors to deliver engaging and supportive practical sessions in Design & Technology (DT) and Hairdressing and/or Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy. This role involves working with secondary-aged pupils who have Special Educational Needs (SEND) and behavioural challenges.
Tutors will deliver vocational learning through a combination of 1:1 and small group work, supporting pupils to develop practical skills, confidence, and positive engagement with learning.
Key Responsibilities
1. Deliver vocational sessions in DT and/or Hairdressing / Hair & Beauty during afternoon timetable slots
2. Work with pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
3. Adapt delivery to meet individual learning, behavioural, and emotional needs
4. Plan session-level activities in line with an existing curriculum framework
5. Develop or adapt resources required to deliver sessions effectively
6. Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
7. Liaise with PRU staff to monitor progress and behaviour
8. Uphold safeguarding and professional standards at all times
Curriculum & Planning
9. The overall curriculum is already set
10. Tutors will be responsible for session-level planning, tailoring delivery to pupil needs
11. Resources to deliver sessions will need to be developed or adapted by the tutor
Essential Requirements
12. Teaching qualification: PGCE, CertEd, QTS, or QTLS
13. Minimum Level 3 qualification in the relevant vocational subject (DT or Hairdressing / Hair & Beauty)
14. Experience teaching or tutoring young people
15. Experience working with SEND learners and/or pupils with behavioural needs
16. Ability to engage, motivate, and manage pupils in a PRU setting
17. Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one)
Desirable Experience
18. Background as a SEND tutor, secondary school teacher, or vocational college tutor
19. Experience in alternative provision, PRUs, or specialist education settings
20. Strong behaviour management skills
