As an Assistant Scientist within the Ecotoxicology team at Fera, you will undertake general laboratory maintenance tasks to ensure smooth facility operations. You will assist with GLP-compliant laboratory studies, semi-field/field studies, and other research projects as required.
What you’ll be doing:
1. Managing laboratory facilities, including daily equipment checks, instrument maintenance, and housekeeping.
2. Conducting work according to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards and SOPs.
3. Performing laboratory studies on the toxicological effects of chemicals in the environment, using standard laboratory equipment.
4. Assisting in developing protocols for invertebrate cultures and collaborating with research teams to meet study requirements.
5. Maintaining husbandry facilities to promote organism health and optimal working conditions.
6. Conducting field and semi-field procedures.
7. Maintaining accurate written and digital records.
8. Data entry, verification, and reporting for study directors.
9. Calculating and reporting results.
What we’re looking for:
1. Experience with laboratory techniques.
2. Experience working within a quality system (e.g., GLP, UKAS, ISO).
3. Preferably, experience in aquatic ecotoxicology projects.
4. Strong record-keeping skills for experimental work.
5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
6. Proficiency in IT software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
7. Good organizational skills to prioritize and complete tasks under deadlines.
8. Adaptability to a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
9. Knowledge of regulatory risk assessment studies.
10. Willingness to travel occasionally and work weekends as needed.
