Senior Microstation Structural Engineering Modeller/Technician
Building Engineering | London, Birmingham or Newark
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and detail‑driven Senior Structural Engineering Modeller/Technician to join our Civil and Structural Engineering team. You will play a key role in supporting the delivery of building projects in the railway sector and other sectors across the UK, working closely with engineers and multidisciplinary colleagues to develop high‑quality design models, drawings, and coordinated technical outputs. Your modelling and drawing expertise in MicroStation and Autodesk applications will be central to the successful delivery of complex and fast‑paced projects within a collaborative and forward‑thinking technical environment.
Purpose and Scope of the Role
As a Senior Engineering Technician, you will support civil and structural engineer design delivery in producing accurate and compliant design information for a variety of projects. Your responsibilities will include preparing 2D and 3D models, developing detailed drawings, and supporting the flow of digital information across active workstreams. You will work with MicroStation applications as your primary modelling and CAD platform and apply your broader experience with Autodesk and AutoCAD to support the wider digital delivery of civil, structural, and multidisciplinary building designs. You will assist in reviewing outputs, maintaining drawing quality, and ensuring that all design information aligns with applicable standards, project requirements, and internal quality expectations.
Working with senior engineers and project managers, you will help manage technical documentation, maintain drawing registers, support document control activities, and ensure that design information is issued clearly, accurately, and on time in accordance with project design assurance workflows. Your role will involve interpreting engineering instructions, incorporating survey data, and helping to shape well‑structured design deliverables across a range of buildings.
Technical Responsibilities and Digital Delivery
* Help produce precise models and drawings using MicroStation applications, ensuring that engineering intent is clearly represented and fully coordinated with all supporting disciplines.
* Contribute to the consistency and accuracy of design information by following established CAD standards, applying project‑specific requirements, and supporting the wider team in maintaining a structured, traceable flow of digital data.
* Apply sound technical judgement, take responsibility for producing high‑quality outputs, and play an active role in refining workflows to support efficient delivery and compliance with assurance processes.
Team Collaboration and Communication
* Work closely with engineers, technicians, architects, project managers, and external partners to ensure that design information is coordinated, well presented, and aligned with project expectations.
* Mentor junior colleagues where appropriate and contribute to a positive working environment where knowledge is shared and continuous improvement is encouraged.
* Use clear written and verbal communication in design discussions and the preparation of technical outputs for internal and external audiences.
Professional Development and Progression
* Access structured training programmes, mentoring, and development pathways that support professional registration such as EngTech or equivalent technician memberships.
* Gain exposure to national rail frameworks, major infrastructure projects, and multidisciplinary environments while developing technical strengths and positioning for future advancement into Principal Technician, BIM Coordination, or digital delivery leadership roles.
Qualifications and Experience
You will bring proven experience as a structural engineering technician within the UK rail sector and strong competence in MicroStation applications as your primary modelling and CAD tools, preferably with complementary practical experience with Autodesk applications. You will have a solid background in the structured design submission and assurance of design in railway sector projects. Demonstrable experience in use of Bentley Projectwise and Assetwise is an advantage. Strong organisational skills, the ability to work proactively and autonomously, and a commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality technical work will be central to your success. A relevant HND qualification or equivalent experience is expected.
Equality and Accommodation
In alignment with the Equality Act 2010, we will make reasonable adjustments to support candidates and employees requiring additional arrangements. This could include adaptations to work schedules, training approaches, or the physical workspace. Please inform us if you need any accommodations during the recruitment process or in your day‑to‑day role.
