Job overview
We are a highly supportive school with strong subject and senior leadership to help you develop. We are looking for an enthusiastic professional to join our History department; someone who is passionate about their subject, communicates well with young people and make a positive impact on their learning.
Being an all-through school allows us to work closely with Primary colleagues and share best practice between Phases to ensure smooth transition for students on entry into the Secondary Phase. There are also exciting plans to extend our Post-16 provision.
The History department comprises of 3 full-time teachers, including a Curriculum Leader and an Achievement Director who are all passionate Historians. We are looking for a 4th full-time member of the team to cover maternity leave. Both the History and Geography departments work collaboratively to support each other both with the demands of our work and our wellbeing. Planning is centralised as we aim to work collaboratively so both departments are fully resourced. However, teachers are encouraged to use their own expertise, select sources and material suitable to the learners in their classes and have flexibility in how they address learning objectives to ensure the best outcomes for their students.
The successful candidate will make their lessons engaging, relevant and teach students about the world they live in to help them make sense of modern life by linking to past lives and current events. The successful candidate will value developing key employability and life skills such as analysing evidence, considering impact, critical thinking, research, reciprocation and value developing literacy.
Both History and Geography are popular GCSE options. We have 12 classes across Key Stage 4 in GCSE History and 15 in GCSE Geography. GCSE studies start in Year 9. The successful candidate will be able to teach up to KS4 across a wide range of abilities and be an inspirational practitioner.
At Key Stage 4, our students currently follow AQA.
Aylesbury Vale Academy has outperformed all other local non-selective schools. History and Geography GCSE results evidence students make good progress. The gaps between the progress of SEN and Pupil Premium students continues to narrow. The successful candidate will be joining extremely effective departments with ambitious goals who do not take pupils' background as a barrier to achievement.
The successful applicant will be passionate about learning, have strong inter-personal skills, be resilient and be an excellent teacher. The ideal candidate will have great subject knowledge. A willingness to teach Geography alongside History would be an advantage.
Visiting the school prior to submission of an application is warmly welcomed.
Our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our children will be reflected throughout the recruitment process, and the successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and an online screening check.
We reserve the right to withdraw this advert before the closing date if we are able to appoint a suitable candidate.
