Salary: £37,280 - £38,862 Location: Council House/Hybrid WorkingHours: 37 hours a weekContract Type: PermanentClosing Date: Sunday 28th June 2026 The introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act has opened up a fantastic opportunity for the Private Rented Sector Team here at Derby City Council to expand and welcome new staff. We are looking for an experienced and motivated Housing Standards Officer to join our team and help improve housing conditions across the community. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about housing, public health, and enforcement to make a real impact by ensuring properties meet required legal and safety standards. The Opportunity In the role of Housing Standards Officer, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact: • Inspect dwellings and enforce statutory provisions to ensure compliance with the authorities’ statutory obligations, and provide guidance, information, and training to landlords to aid their compliance. • Prepare, monitor and authorise legal and other documentation, and to instigate legal proceedings to ensure compliance with the authorities’ statutory obligations • To keep up to date with relevant legislation, standards, guidance, and other information to develop any appropriate specialist knowledge of relevant subject areas to ensure compliance with the statutory requirements. • To attend and contribute to meetings, committees, public enquiries, tribunals, and court hearings in a technical, expert, or advisory capacity. About You To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have... • Have a good knowledge of deficiencies and hazards and housing and understanding of the enforcement options. • Experience of dealing with members of the general public, tenants of private rented sector (PRS) accommodation and landlords of PRS accommodation. • Possession of a CIEH approved Higher Certificate in Housing Practice/Diploma in Housing Regulation or; a BTech in Environmental Health or Level 4 Apprenticeship in Regulatory Compliance (Housing) or be working towards a qualification. • Possession of a certificate of training in the Housing Health and Safety Rating System – HHSRS. • Educated to A Level or equivalent Who We Are Here at Derby City Council, we're dedicated to delivering nearly 250 first-class services to citizens and businesses in the heart of the Midlands.
