Offer description

Are you looking for a role where your engineering expertise truly shapes the safety, performance and long‑term reliability of critical systems? Within our System Engineering team you’ll join a highly skilled, multi‑disciplined group trusted to manage some of the site’s most significant plant assets. This opportunity places you at the centre of Mechanical engineering ownership, where your decisions directly support safe operations, regulatory compliance and the long‑term integrity of essential systems.

We would like to welcome someone with real drive, curiosity and enthusiasm, a senior engineer who thrives on delivering exceptional service to customers and stakeholders while navigating complex technical challenges. You’ll play a key role in programme delivery and continuous improvement, ensuring our asset portfolio remains safe, robust, compliant and future‑ready. Could this be the next step where your engineering capability makes a lasting impact?

We also welcome applications for those looking to develop and therefore may not meet all the essential criteria for the role. In these circumstances there may be a lower grade offered for a development opportunity. The successful candidate would be considered on a case‑by‑case basis and supported with a Personal Development Plan to enable a clear path for progression into the role.

What you will be doing

In this role, you’ll become the central point of ownership for critical plant systems, developing and maintaining long‑term engineering strategies that ensure safety, reliability and compliance. You’ll shape system health by analysing performance trends, conducting routine system walk‑downs, and applying learning from operational experience to drive continuous improvement. Produce and manage modification proposals and act as the Nominated Responsible Engineer (NRE) for plant modifications. As a trusted technical authority, you’ll also contribute to essential documentation, system modifications and safety‑related decisions, helping safeguard operations now and into the future.

You’ll work alongside a skilled team, providing proactive support to projects, mentoring fellow engineers and deputising for the Section Head when required. This role also offers the opportunity to grow into positions of greater influence, including working towards the site’s LOLER Compliance Manager and fulfilling delegated Design Authority responsibilities.

Key areas of impact

* Owning assigned systems/assets, ensuring compliance with PSSR, PUWER and LOLER requirements.
* Developing long‑term engineering strategies and making recommendations for system and/or asset investments. Recording, analysing and acting on system performance data to maintain safe, reliable operation.
* Producing and approving key technical documentation for assigned systems such as Technical Specifications, Work Instructions, Method Statements, Plant Item Operating Instructions, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments.
* Providing technical leadership to projects and maintaining a good overall knowledge of the safety case as it applies to the assigned systems and knowing the functional requirements limits and conditions for safe operation.
* Complying with the site’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures, work instructions and risk assessments and supporting the continuous improvement of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards.

Qualifications

* Minimum National Qualifications Framework NQF level 5, preferably a relevant Degree (NQF Level 6) or work‑in‑progress.
* Extensive experience in a practising disciplined Engineering role – Mechanical on industrial plant/equipment including aging assets.
* Strong mechanical asset maintenance, operation and/or maintenance expertise.
* Detailed knowledge of PSSR, PUWER, LOLER and an understanding of relevant company/national engineering standards.

Additional desirable skills

* Working knowledge of the Safety Rules and detailed knowledge of risk assessment methodology and relevant Site Licence and Quality Management System requirements.
* Contract management experience.
* Member of a relevant Engineering Institute and Charter status (not essential).

Benefits

* Flexibility on base location for multi‑site roles.
* Happy to discuss flexible working options.

Application requirements

All successful candidates will need to provide proof of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment/education history covering the last 3–5 years in line with NRS Baseline Security requirements. Some roles may also require full Security Clearance, which involves additional checks. For details, please refer to the Defence Business Services National Security Vetting (DBS NSV) guidance.

EEO Statement

At NRS, we value diversity and inclusion and encourage applications from underrepresented groups. We want to ensure you feel supported throughout the application process and provide reasonable adjustments where necessary and requested.
