Science Technician

Location: Buckinghamshire

Salary: Competitive hourly rate

Contract: Temporary to permanent role

Newstaff Employment Services is recruiting a Science Lab Technician to support a busy secondary school science department. This role is ideal for someone organised, practical, and confident working in a lab environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Prepare and set up equipment, materials, and solutions for science lessons and exams
2. Support teachers and students during practical’s, following CLEAPSS and school H&S procedures
3. Maintain, repair, and organise apparatus, chemicals, and storage areas
4. Carry out risk assessments, safety checks, and PAT testing
5. Manage stock levels, place orders, check deliveries, and maintain accurate records
6. Assist with general departmental admin and support (e.g., displays, cleaning equipment, scribing for SEND, accompanying trips)
7. Liaise with supply teachers, local schools, and external organisations as needed

Requirements

8. Lab or school science experience preferred
9. Strong awareness of health & safety
10. Good organisation and communication skills
11. Flexible, reliable, and able to work in a busy school environment

Requirements

GCSE (grade A* – C) or equivalent, in English, Maths and Science.

Further/Higher Qualification in a Science-related discipline, NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (or willingness to work towards, within an agreed timescale).

Basic Health and Safety Certificate (or willingness to work towards, within an agreed timescale).

First Aid Training (or willingness to work towards, within an agreed timescale).

Experience of working in a relevant discipline within a laboratory or similar environment.

Experience of working in a school or similar environment.

Verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively communicate with colleagues, students and other professionals.

Good standard of numeracy skills.

Ability to operate a range of ICT equipment and other specialist resources.

Ability to work flexibly to meet deadlines and respond to unplanned situations.

Efficient, meticulous and organised.
