The Engine Room opened in October and has quickly become one of Derbys most talked-about new restaurants, praised for its bold flavours and relaxed, industrial-chic atmosphere. The menu champions vibrant small plates, hand-stretched pizzas and in-house smoked dishes, with favourites such as mac n cheese balls with gruyere fondue, Bang Bang cauliflower, and the standout pork tomahawk. Desserts like sticky toffee pudding and strawberry and basil Eton mess have helped cement its reputation as a go-to spot for locals, hotel guests and visitors looking for quality food in the heart of the city. We are now seeking a talented Head Chef to lead the kitchen and drive the next phase of this fast-growing venue. This is a full time role, 40 hours per week, with a salary of up to £40,000 .
The Role
You will take full responsibility for the day to day operation of the kitchen, championing high standards of food quality, safety and consistency. You will lead the kitchen team to deliver high quality dishes that reflect The Engine Rooms style, oversee menu development, preparation, service and stock control, and maintain excellent food safety, hygiene and allergen standards. The role involves training and motivating the team, managing food costs and suppliers, working closely with the restaurant management team to ensure smooth service, and contributing ideas to keep the menu fresh and appealing. You will also ensure compliance with company procedures, and play a key part in sustaining the restaurants strong reputation.
Skills and Experience
Minimum 2 years experience in a senior kitchen position
Strong leadership and communication skills
Ability to work well under pressure in a busy kitchen
Passion for fresh, seasonal cooking and delivering memorable dishes
Solid understanding of food safety and kitchen management
Experience developing menus and controlling kitchen costs
A hands on approach and commitment to consistently high standards
