The Role
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Gym and Fitness Manager to lead the delivery of an outstanding fitness and wellbeing experience for students, staff and the wider community. As the sector specialist, you will manage fitness operations across a diverse estate, lead and develop a high-performing team, and ensure facilities operate safely, inclusively and to the highest professional standards.
About the team
Sport and Active Wellness (SAW) is a newly formed directorate at Oxford Brookes University, bringing together sport, participation, performance, wellness and facilities. SAW is committed to delivering an inclusive, high-quality sporting and physical activity offer that enhances the student experience and supports staff and community wellness across all levels of participation.
Based at the Centre for Sport, Headington Campus, with responsibility across the Oxford Brookes sporting estate, including the Boathouse and partner facilities. The role includes cross-site working, evenings and weekends.
What will I be doing
● Lead and line-manage the Fitness Team, including Health and Fitness Advisors and freelance fitness instructors.
● Plan, coordinate and oversee a programme of 50+ fitness classes per week across multiple sites.
● Manage recruitment, onboarding and contractual arrangements for fitness staff and affiliates.
● Ensure the safe, compliant and effective operation of gyms and studios, including health & safety, risk assessments and equipment checks.
● Oversee budgets, invoicing and financial reporting related to fitness and wellness operations.
● Contribute to facility-related projects and wider Sport and Active Wellness initiatives
● Support the development and promotion of fitness and wellness programmes in collaboration with colleagues.
What skills do I need
● Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification (or equivalent) and current First Aid at Work certification.
● Proven experience managing fitness or leisure teams in a customer-facing environment.
● Strong knowledge of health & safety legislation and operational compliance within gym or leisure settings.
● Experience planning and delivering group exercise programmes and managing freelance instructors.
● Financial and operational management skills, including budget oversight and reporting.
● Excellent leadership, communication and people management skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
