We're Hiring a Technical Database Curator for a Stealth Startup (fixed-term contract - max 6 months).
We are seeking a detail-oriented Technical Database Curator to build, manage, maintain, and optimize our extensive data repositories. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in material science, mechanical engineering, or a related field and expertise in data collection, processing, and structuring. You will be responsible for developing high-quality datasets spanning areas such as material science, 3D geometry, fluid dynamics, and actuation/sensing, ensuring their accuracy, consistency, and usability for advanced research and engineering applications.
Your profile
Key Responsibilities:
* Data Curation and Creation
1. Identify, collect, clean, and structure scientific and engineering datasets from multiple sources (academic literature, vendor catalogs, research archives).
2. Design and develop structured datasets tailored to project needs, ensuring their reliability and relevance.
3. Implement data preprocessing techniques, feature extraction, and transformation methods to enhance dataset usability for modeling and analysis.
* Database Optimization
1. Structure and index databases to enable efficient data retrieval and storage.
2. Collaborate with data engineers to ensure databases are scalable and performant.
* Data Integration
1. Work with cross-functional teams to integrate data from multiple sources into centralized repositories.
2. Implement pipelines where necessary to merge disparate datasets.
* Metadata & Standards
1. Develop and maintain metadata standards to enhance data discoverability and usability.
2. Ensure consistent naming conventions and data governance practices.
* Data Quality Assurance
1. Implement rigorous quality control measures to validate data accuracy and resolve inconsistencies.
2. Maintain detailed documentation of data sources, transformations, and validation checks.
* Security & Compliance

2. Stay updated on relevant data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
Required Qualifications:
* Degree in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
* Strong foundational knowledge in the key subject areas relevant to our databases, including material science, 3D geometry, fluid dynamics, and actuation/sensing. Experience or coursework in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, or a similar field is highly desirable.
* Basic knowledge of the test machines used to characterise mechanical properties of a material
* Experience in data collection, preprocessing, and analysis of complex scientific datasets.
* Familiarity with SQL and basic data structuring concepts (database expertise is not a primary requirement but nice to have).
* Basic knowledge of metadata standards and data governance best practices to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and usability.
* Keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to maintaining high data quality, particularly in complex, subject-specific datasets.
* Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
