Smith Institute are looking for Mathematical Consultants to join our team, on a permanent basis. Would you like to join a team of inspiring people ? Smith Institute designs and builds solutions for high-profile clients across industry and government, by combining capabilities in modelling, data science, optimisation, forecasting and AI. We develop and deploy core expertise in mathematical modelling, applied statistics, AI, optimisation and computing to bring fresh thinking and new solutions to challenges where ‘business as usual’ is not an option. We are at the forefront of the industrial and business applications of mathematics and AI. Smith Institute is currently looking to expand its team, in response to opportunities to grow the use of mathematical sciences in industry and government. Your role: Work within teams of experts to transform mathematical ideas into practical reality. Work directly with customers to understand their needs and design the mathematical and computational solutions that best address them. Implement solutions in ways that maximise customer value. Work alongside the Smith Institute’s commercial team, to develop new business opportunities, create proposals for new work, and build great client relationships. Contribute to our intellectual growth in a fast-moving environment of emergent mathematical, computational and statistical techniques. Your skills: Academic excellence at first degree level and preferably also at higher degree level in mathematics, physics, statistics, or a related numerate discipline. Demonstrable experience of applying mathematical and statistical techniques in an industrial or business environment, including an appreciation of the factors that lead to successful outcomes. Strong programming skills, particularly in Python; the ability to capture mathematical and statistical models in software and an understanding of what good software engineering involves. Motivation to succeed in tackling high-value business challenges, and the ability to engage effectively with customers in understanding their requirements and opportunities. Successful applicants will be able to combine taking responsibility for the successful completion of tasks with being an effective player in a team environment. You should be motivated to work effectively without the need for close supervision. Experienced members of our technical staff will provide line management and mentoring.
