Job summary The Band 6 Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist provides expert nursing care to patients with acute and long-term respiratory conditions. The role combines advanced clinical assessment, patient education, multidisciplinary collaboration, and service improvement to support high-quality, evidence-based respiratory care across inpatient and outpatient settings. Main duties of the job Delivering high standards of care to our respiratory patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The role involves inreach to support to inpatients in both emergency and other settings around the hospital, facilitating early discharge pathways, patient assessment, care planning and education using up to date clinical and national guidelines. The role also involves working with patients in an outpatient setting in nurse led clinics and providing ongoing support and guidance for them and their families during their patient journey. Job description Job responsibilities Deliver specialist assessment, diagnosis, and management for patients with conditions such as COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, and cystic fibrosis in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Provide expert advice on long term respiratory conditions, disease management and treatments and selfmanagement strategies. Undertake advanced clinical observations, interpret diagnostic results (spirometry, oximetry, blood gases), and escalate concerns appropriately. Support early discharge and admission avoidance pathways through timely review and intervention. Act as a visible clinical resource for ward teams, offering specialist input into complex cases. Educate patients and carers on disease management, inhaler technique, lifestyle modification, and recognising deterioration. Promote independence and selfmanagement. Provide emotional support and guidance for patients with chronic or lifelimiting respiratory conditions. Work closely with respiratory consultants, physiotherapists, pharmacists, community teams, and primary care to ensure coordinated care. Participate in MDT meetings, case discussions, and discharge planning. Liaise with community respiratory services and palliative care to support seamless transitions. Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of respiratory care pathways and protocols. Lead quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing readmissions, improving symptom control, and enhancing patient experience. Support audit, research, and data collection to inform service planning and evidencebased practice. Provide mentorship, training, and clinical supervision to junior staff and students. Maintain and develop specialist knowledge through CPD, clinical supervision, and participation in professional networks. Ensure practice aligns with NMC standards, local policies, and national respiratory guidelines (e.g., NICE, BTS). Demonstrate leadership behaviours and act as a role model for highquality, compassionate care.
