Job overview

You will be a trainee in Therapeutic Radiography and will complete a BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography as a level 6 apprentice which will encompass teaching at the University, clinical placements and workplace based experience.

During the apprenticeship you will perform all of the elements in this job description as a learner and under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered practitioner. The degree apprenticeship programme combines and integrates both academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers.

You will continuously develop their skills and ability as they progress through the degree programme so that on completion they can manage and be responsible for a clinical workload, with supervision from a Senior Therapeutic Radiographer/Team Leader.

It is expected that the level of responsibility under each of the following duties will increase throughout the employee’s time on the degree programme.

The Therapeutic Radiographer apprenticeship will commence in March 2027 for both academic and clinical placement until this time you will be responsible for providing a range of clinical duties under the guidance and supervision of the team leader, supporting the Therapy Radiography team and the activities of the Rosemere Radiotherapy Department in patient care.

Main duties of the job

You will rotate through pre-treatment and treatment delivery allowing you to learn and develop as an autonomous practitioner under the supervision of a qualified practitioner in all aspects of external beam radiotherapy localisation, planning, data prep, treatment delivery and imaging.

Apprentices are supported by a radiotherapy practice educator and lifelong learning is central to both Departmental and Trust values.

You will work flexibly to deliver an excellent service in all Radiotherapy work areas, ensuring efficient throughput of workload and delivery of high standards of technical and patient care whist acting as a role model and patient advocate as part of the Radiotherapy Team.

This post will be paid Band 5 (Annexe 21) leading to band 5 on successful completion of 3 year apprenticeship (based on 2025/2026 salaries)

Year 1 – 65% of the top band 5 £24,567.40 pa

Year 2 – 70% of the top band 5 £26,457.20 pa

Year 3 – 75% of the top band 5 £28,347 pa

On completion of training salary will be £31,049 pa

Working for our organisation

We are part of a Radiotherapy Operational Delivery Network collaborating with the Christie NHS FT and The Clatterbridge Centre NHS FT to provide high quality radiotherapy across the North West of England.

We have seven matched Elekta linear accelerators all with cone beam imaging capability, two Phillips BORE CT scanners and an Xstrahl Superficial Unit networked by a MOSAIQ patient management system. We employ a wide range of techniques including IGRT, IMRT and VMAT. Radiographer-led daily IGRT is routine for complex and innovative radiotherapy delivery procedures. We are a commissioned provider of Intracranial SRS/T and SABR. Surface guided Radiotherapy has been rolled out across the whole department in the last year and we have installed the first Elekta Harmony Linac in the UK with a second Harmony added later. We have also installed an Elekta EVO linac with the capabitlities for adaptive Radiotherapy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please note if you are non-UK national, in order to be eligible for the apprenticeship you must meet the following criteria:

1. Residency: You must have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for at least the three-year period immediately preceding the apprenticeship start date.
2. Purpose of Residence: The 3-year residency must not have been solely for the purpose of receiving full-time education.
3. Right to Work/Visa: You must have a valid visa or immigration status that allows you to work and study in the UK for the duration of the apprenticeship

Under Supervision: 1.1. Provide timely and efficient Radiotherapy planning and treatment delivery to patients according to clinical protocols and service priorities. 1.2 Ensure patients receive a high standard of clinical care and that you meet the standards expected from the Society and College of Radiographers. 1.3 Assess and record relevant information at earliest opportunity to ensure referral for radiotherapy is appropriate and relevant for presenting condition and risk assessment need. 1.4 Identifies any specific precautions or contraindications to the proposed treatment and takes appropriate action. 1.5 Has achieved and maintained core and specific competencies, using clinical reasoning and a wide range of appropriate skills. 1.6 Performs delivery of treatment, associated patient care and enhanced clinical skills to a high quality standard. 1.7 Records all activities carefully, contemporaneously and accurately consistent with legislation, policies and procedures. 1.8 Proactively engages with patients, relatives and carers to seek their views, gain agreement and to keep them informed about their treatment and care. 1.9 Demonstrates safe & effective practice in the planning, delivery and on-treatment verification processes (in- vivo dosimetry, image acquisition and analysis) of radiotherapy. 1.10 Respond to unforeseen situations that take precedence over planned work. 1.11 Escalates concerns about patient condition in a timely manner where unable to provide appropriate intervention 1.12 Receives positive feedback from own patients/relatives/team /students. 1.13 Support the development of support workers and students. 1.14 Use highly developed communication skills to establish good working relationships with colleagues, service users and carers. 1.15 Use verbal and non-verbal communication skills and sensitivity with patients, relatives and carers to overcome barriers to communication e.g. loss of hearing, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain, anxiety, problems with cognition. 1.16 To be an active member in the evaluation of clinical services including the development, implementation and monitoring of clinical standards and outcome measures. 1.18 To reflect on service delivery issues and notify managers / area leads where appropriate. 2.1 Follow supervision guidelines and consult with Therapeutic Radiographers to ensure optimum outcome for patients with clear presentation of complex facts and analysis to enable effective decision making. 2.2 Supervise support workers and students within the team. 2.3 Contribute to the planning and development of the team. 2.4 Take responsibility for delegated tasks and service development activities. 2.5 Priorities work appropriately and manages own time effectively to maintain and promote high quality technical and patient care. 2.6 To work towards becoming a clinical resource for the Trust and the wider health, social care, and educational communities. 2.7 Ensure any equipment used is stored in adherence with to relevant policies and that you are up to date with competencies to use equipment within the team. 2.8 Adhere to health and safety policies and procedures. 2.9 Raise incidents and near misses using the incident reporting systems. 2.10 Be aware of the need for judicious use of resources and maintaining stock control 2.11 Be prepared to work flexible hours and shift patterns to meet patient needs and the workload demands of the service, including Bank Holiday working as required. 3.1 Adhere/work towards to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency. 3.2 Maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) by: implementing new learning from academic studies and clinical placements into practice and use of reflective practice. Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

4. GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at level 2 or above (grade 4, or previously C) or Functional skills numeracy and literacy at level 2
5. Level 3 study
6. A minimum of six months experience in a health and social care capacity, including any placements or work-based learning undertaken as part of a Level 3 qualification.

Desirable criteria

7. ECDL or formal qualifications in word processing and spreadsheets
8. Care Certificate

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

9. Previous or current employment in health/ social care setting
10. Experience with working within Oncology pathway
11. Experience of recent work-based learning or self-directed learning
12. Knowledge of Information Governance and Confidentiality
13. Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance

Desirable criteria

14. Knowledge of Radiotherapy Pathway
15. Knowledge of the NHS constitution
16. Experience of working in a healthcare setting including varied and unpredictable environments
