Overview
Content Designer role at UK Home Office. You will work in an agile, multi-disciplinary team in the Migration, Borders and Technology Portfolio (MBTP) to design accessible services that meet user needs and have a lasting impact on user‑centred products and services.
The Home Office keeps our UK citizens safe and our country secure, contributing to security and economic prosperity. You may work on projects across border processing, visas and internal tools for staff, and services for visas, passports and registration of vital events.
What will you be doing?
* Scoping, writing and editing content for internal and public-facing digital services
* Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to identify user needs and determine the right design approach
* Choosing the best format for delivering content to users
* Monitoring the performance of content and tools, identifying ways to improve the service
* Working with relevant stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure content is relevant and accurate
* Helping other team members understand content design, its importance, and how to work with content designers
* Contributing to the UCD community by attending and organising events, leading discussions and workshops, and sharing ideas and best practice
* Encouraging constructive critique and peer reviews to improve work
Key responsibilities
* Prototyping and concept creation: advising on or creating product, service or policy concepts and prototypes using sketching, design software, physical mock-ups or code
* Content design: writing and editing content in line with defined processes and standards, making complex language clear for non-specialist audiences
* Evidence‑based design: using analytics, feedback and research to understand user needs and inform content decisions
* Accessibility and inclusion: assessing accessibility of online content and advising teams how to fix issues to be inclusive and accessible
* Collaboration: participating in group work, seeking feedback and giving constructive feedback
* Communication, persuasion and advocacy: articulating the benefits of user‑centred approaches to stakeholders based on evidence
Skills and experience
* Prototyping and concept creation: advising on or creating product, service or policy concepts and prototypes
* Content design: writing and editing content to defined standards and making complex language simple
* Evidence-based design: using analytics, feedback and research to inform decisions
* Accessibility and inclusion: ensuring content is accessible to all
* Collaboration: facilitating teamwork and giving/receiving feedback
* Communicate, persuade and advocate: clear articulation of user‑centred benefits to stakeholders
