Academic Support Assistant
Location: Chester le Street
Working hours: 8:30am – 4pm, Monday to Friday
Contract: Temporary, long term
Leader Education are recruiting a motivated Academic Support Assistant to support Key Stage 3 and 4 students within a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU).
This role focuses on working with young people who may be at risk of, or have experienced, exclusion from mainstream education, helping them rebuild confidence and re-engage with learning in a structured and supportive environment. You will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to deliver tailored academic and emotional support, promote positive behaviour, and encourage student participation and progress.
Engagement is at the heart of the academy, with learning enriched through immersive and practical experiences. Pupils benefit from a range of hands-on opportunities, from spending time in the forest school—developing outdoor skills, building fires, and exploring their surroundings—to taking responsibility for the school’s own garden project. These activities help link learning to the natural environment while promoting independence, confidence, and valuable life skills.
Key responsibilities:
• Deliver 1:1 and small group support tailored to individual needs
• Support positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and confidence
• Build strong relationships to encourage engagement and motivation
• Help students re-engage with learning and school life
• Manage challenging situations calmly and effectively
