Healthcare Assistant - Trauma and Orthopaedics
Band 2
Permanent
23 Hours per week - Day and Night shifts

An opportunity has arisen within the orthopaedic division at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Aintree Site). This is an exciting post which allows the successful candidate the opportunity to work as part of the Orthopaedic trauma team at Aintree. We are a 27 bedded acute trauma and orthopaedic unit covering all orthopaedic needs across Liverpool. The role involves supporting qualified practitioners to deliver high standards of patient care in an acute setting. The successful candidate would be joining a supportive and enthusiastic team committed to high patient care standards. A full trust induction and 2 week ward preceptorship will be available, with support for future development. The successful candidate must be able to work days and nights and be flexible to meet service needs.

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, assist the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of basic care for patients and their families/carers.

The Royal Liverpool University Hospital provides complex planned care and specialist services in a large inpatient setting.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out basic personal care and grooming (including emptying catheter bags).
* Provide for patients’ toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
* Support patients in managing incontinence.
* Measure patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to the Registered Nurse.
* Prepare and serve patient meals, drinks and snacks. Assist with feeding as necessary.
* Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Department regarding meals needed.
* Report patients’ dietary intake as indicated in the patient’s plan of care.
* Carry out movement and handling within safe practice guidelines and the patient’s manual handling plan.
* Enable patients to maintain/improve mobility using exercise and mobility aids as directed by care plans.
* Assist in preventing pressure sore development as directed by the Registered Nurse and the patient’s plan of care.
* Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
* Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
* Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
* General observations of patients and report any concerns to Registered Nursing Staff.

Qualifications

* Demonstrates willingness and capability to undertake NVQ level 2


Experience

* Previous experience in a caring role


Knowledge

* Basic computer skills


Skills

* Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the healthcare setting


Other

* Ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken word
