Role: Learning Disability or Mental Health Nurse

We are looking for an experienced Band 6 Learning Disability or Mental Health Nurse to join the Intensive Support Team in Suffolk. This is an all-age service, and we would like to hear from applicants with experience in working with adults or children who have a Learning Disability and/or Autism.

The Intensive Support Team forms part of the Acute Service in partnership with the Assessment and Treatment Inpatient Unit, who are co-located in Ipswich. The role will be to support prevention of admission or care breakdown by understanding the function of behaviour that challenges, using Applied Behavioural Analysis and a Positive Behavioural Support approach. We also support timely and secure discharges from inpatient units by working across into the Inpatient Service during stays in hospital. The Intensive Support Team is part of the Learning Disability and Autism Pathway, which has a fresh approach to ideas and service delivery supported by the Trust. We are a vibrant, creative, multi-disciplinary team that works closely with other services, both statutory and in the private and voluntary sector.


Main duties of the job

After induction, the main duties include:

* Participating in functional assessments of behaviour
* Participation in analysis of assessment findings
* Participation in formulation, conclusions and recommendations
* Working with people directly in their homes or in hospital settings
* Reviewing risk assessments and crisis response if required
* Helping carers and families implement recommendations (this can include delivering training)
* Acting as the Shift Co-ordinator — taking responsibility for the smooth running of the shift, delegation of duties, making decisions in relation to issues that arise, reviewing risk
* Supervisory responsibilities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work directly with service users in their homes, in hospital or educational provisions. Coverage is across Suffolk. You will establish relationships with carers, service users and other involved professionals, undertake longer-term assessments around functions of behaviour and participate in formulation and analysis. The overarching aim is to understand the function of behaviour that presents a challenge and to implement strategies that avoid or lessen impact, improving quality of life for people with learning disabilities or autism. There will be supervisory responsibilities for Clinical Support Workers or Assistant Practitioners within the team. IST is a welcoming, vibrant, multi-disciplinary team working on a shared caseload.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

* Nursing degree or equivalent; Mentoring / Mentorship (ENB988 or equivalent)

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of study in social care / health-related fields

Experience

Essential criteria

* Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
* Previous experience in learning disability

Desirable criteria

* Previous community experience
* Previous experience working with people with Autism

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

* Ability to process, plan and delegate work
* Ability to identify and act on changes in health care needs

Desirable criteria

* Time management and reflective practice

Knowledge

Essential criteria

* Up-to-date and evidence-based knowledge of Person-Centred Care
* Working knowledge / application of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
