We are looking for an undergraduate student to work for a 12‑month placement starting July 2026 developing machine learning approaches for land surface modelling.
Base pay range
£27,170.
Responsibilities
* Assist in developing and testing machine learning techniques to improve the computational performance of JULES.
* Support the identification of model components where ML can provide acceleration.
* Work with scientists and software developers to integrate ML approaches into existing workflows.
* Contribute to project documentation, reporting, and (where appropriate) publications or presentations.
Essential criteria, skills and experience
* Studying for an undergraduate degree in a STEM subject (data sciences, applied mathematics, physical sciences or computing).
* Some experience of scientific programming, ideally with Python.
* Understanding of applying machine learning or computational techniques.
* Strong problem‑solving skills and willingness to learn new methods for environmental applications.
* Excellent verbal and written communication reflecting the ability to listen, engage and clearly communicate with a varied audience, and to facilitate good teamwork.
