Job Title: Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with Labour Ward Lead

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, located on the west coast of Lancashire, serves the Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre areas. Role Overview

We seek a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to join our team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The role involves delivering high-quality women's health services, with a focus on obstetric clinical governance and Labour Ward leadership, supporting initiatives like the Saving Babies Lives care bundle. The department handles approximately 2,500 births annually and emphasizes family-centered care.

The position includes responsibilities in clinical governance, teaching, research, and quality improvement. The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, patient-centered care, with flexible working options including remote work.


Main Duties

1. Clinical Leadership & Safety: Lead senior clinical decision-making on the labour ward, manage complex cases, promote normal birth, and ensure safety and escalation protocols.
2. Governance & Service Development: Oversee incident reviews, audits, and guideline implementation; foster a culture of continuous improvement.
3. Education & Training: Provide mentorship and teaching, lead emergency training sessions, and support multidisciplinary education.
4. Organizational Engagement: Participate in governance meetings, engage with service users, and contribute to strategic planning.


About the Organization

The Directorate of Maternity and Women’s Services is committed to high-quality, patient-centered care. Our team includes 11 consultants, specialists, trainees, midwives, nurses, and neonatal staff. We provide comprehensive maternity and gynaecology services, including a Level 2 Neonatal Unit, outpatient clinics, surgical procedures, and research initiatives.


Responsibilities


Clinical Duties

* Lead care on the Delivery Suite, ensuring safe, effective delivery of maternal and neonatal care.
* Manage high-risk pregnancies and support obstetric emergencies.
* Supervise and perform obstetric procedures, conduct antenatal clinics, and support postnatal care.


Gynaecology

* Provide outpatient and surgical gynaecology services, including minimally invasive procedures.
* Manage complications in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and provide expert referrals.


Service Development

* Review and develop clinical pathways, implement new technologies, and support service expansion.


Leadership & Management

* Lead obstetric governance activities and ensure high standards of care.
* Support junior staff, contribute to policy development, and ensure compliance with national standards.


Education & Research

* Mentor trainees, deliver teaching, and participate in research and audits.


On-Call & Emergency

* Participate in an 11-week rota, respond to emergencies, and supervise junior staff during shifts.


Service Improvement

* Identify and lead initiatives for service enhancement, patient feedback, and innovative care models.


Professional Development

* Engage in CPD, appraisal, and attend conferences to stay current with advancements.


Person Specification

Applicants must have:

* Relevant GMC registration and CCT or equivalent.
* MB ChB or equivalent, MRCOG, and a qualification in medical education.
* Experience in obstetric and gynaecological management, leadership, and research.

Skills required include excellent communication, teaching, organizational, leadership, and service development abilities. Experience in social termination of pregnancy is also desirable.
