We are keen to employ a diverse workforce that reflects the people of Scotland. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and particularly from groups currently under-represented, including people with disabilities, those from minority ethnic communities or from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within West Lothian’s Community Learning and Development Youth Services as a Community Education Worker.

Community Education Workers support young people on an individual and group basis:

*
* In transition
* Building self-esteem and self-confidence to create confident individuals
* Developing the ability to manage personal and social relationships
* Creating learning, developing new skills and becoming successful learners
* To consider risk, make reasoned decisions and become effective contributors
* Developing a world view which widens horizons and supports responsible citizenship.

If you are passionate about celebrating inclusion, equality and diversity, co-designing learning and development opportunities, and are empathetic to challenges and barriers faced by young people, then this may be the role for you.

You will be school locality-based, initially working in The James Young High School and Inveralmond Community High School learning communities, in Livingston, and a variety of community settings, which may include youth clubs, community centres, outdoor learning venues, local churches, private sector venues and care settings.

You will have responsibility for planning, organising, delivering and supporting Youth Services provision to young people across West Lothian who have or are at risk of disengaging from education with a focus on early intervention and wide ranging, sustained support, including a fully integrated professional service to improve young people’s chances of leaving school to a positive destination and support the conditions for sustainable economic growth in West Lothian.

You will have the ability to manage and coordinate a team of staff and volunteers, to deliver high-quality youth work provision relevant to the needs, interests and aspirations of young people.

You will have previous experience of working with young people on issues of health and wellbeing, working with young people displaying challenging/confrontational behaviours and digital youth work provision.

You will have experience of working in partnership with staff from other public and voluntary sector agencies.

You will have awareness of Curriculum for Excellence, GIRFEC, and UNCRC, with experience of developing learning and education programmes with young people relevant to issues and needs.

This post is considered Regulated Work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scotland Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by West Lothian Council. xsngvjr
