Consultants in Acute Medicine

Enjoy a £20,000 bonus recruitment premium and a competitive relocation package of up to £8,000. Applications are invited for enthusiastic Acute Medicine Consultants to join our expanding team managing patients within our in‑patient and 'Same Day' units. We are looking to recruit substantive Consultants in Acute Medicine, supporting the expanding service. Both full time and part time applications will be considered.


Main duties of the job

We recognise the importance of our team maintaining specialist interests in other medical specialties. To support this, there is an opportunity for the successful candidate to receive a dedicated session offered as part of the role (1 PA).


Clinical Duties

* Multidisciplinary team working with regular MDT discussions.
* Providing evidence‑based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
* Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support).
* Development of subspecialty interests that fit in with division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
* Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties, and contributing to undergraduate and post‑graduate and continuing medical education activities.
* Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.
* Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
* Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
* Participation in an out‑of‑hours consultant rota, detailed within the job plan section.
* Consultants allocated daily to each area as above.

Job responsibilities (additional)

The Trust supports professional skills and development through attendance at conferences, education supervision and opportunities to lead improvement projects. Consultants are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that improve the patient experience.

* Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Divisional Management Team.
* Contribute to leadership and development of services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director in line with the Trusts business plans.
* Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division, supporting the Divisional Director to achieve objectives.
* Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
* Assist in cost‑effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non‑pay items such as equipment and drugs, within budgets.
* Work within the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, developing clinical policies and adhering to standing orders, financial instructions and procedures.
* Undertake direct supervision of junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust‑wide teaching programmes.
* Investigate and report incidents, participate in clinical risk management.
* Embodiment of the STAR values and NHS Constitution principles.


Clinical Governance and Audit

All consultants participate in clinical effectiveness activities, maintaining and fostering improvements in quality and standards of clinical services.

Consultants support Clinical/Medical Leadership teams to achieve:

* Production of a Division annual clinical governance plan.
* Production of a Division quality strategy.
* Production of a Division quarterly report to the Trusts Clinical Governance and Risk Committee.
* Ensuring targets within the plan are met, including:
o Adoption of evidence‑based practice and compliance with government guidance (e.g., NICE).
o Establishment and implementation of a Division clinical audit programme.
o Completion of risk assessments and compliance with Trust risk management policies and strategies.
o Encouragement of research and development.
o Ensuring staff meet education and training targets agreed within the Trusts annual plan.
o Ensuring timely and effective complaints management.
o Contributing to workforce planning to ensure timely availability of appropriate clinical skills.


Person Specification


Essential Qualifications

* Fully registered with the GMC.
* MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
* Entry on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at interview.


Essential Experience

* Clinical training/experience equivalent to UK CCT.
* Expertise in full range of medical conditions.
* Ability to lead a multi‑professional team and take full independent responsibility for clinical care.
* Sub‑speciality interests will be supported.
