Our VAT team is looking for a Manager to join a growing department. This is a key role with direct access to clients and the chance to develop strong professional relationships, while applying and expanding your technical VAT expertise. You will be encouraged and supported in delivering clear, confident advice across a wide range of VAT matters. We welcome applicants with broad VAT experience, particularly those who have worked within our core specialist areas: not‑for‑profit, real estate & construction, corporate finance, media, and international sectors. Key Responsibilities Deliver VAT advisory services across a broad range of issues and sectors, with a particular focus on property and not-for-profit clients, while providing support to the compliance function as required. Manage a client portfolio, ensuring deadlines are met, work remains within budget, and projects are completed to a high standard. Collaborate closely with VAT Managers and Directors on advisory and consultancy projects, recognising risks and escalating matters appropriately when senior input is required. Review compliance work as required, including VAT returns and underlying assumptions prepared by compliance specialists, ensuring accuracy before submission to HMRC. Own and manage smaller projects independently, liaising directly with clients and colleagues while demonstrating confidence and initiative with limited supervision. Research and apply technical VAT knowledge by interpreting legislation and providing practical solutions and basic tax planning advice relevant to client work. Review VAT returns and related assumptions prepared by compliance specialists prior to submission to HMRC, where required. Collaborate across the firm to address internal queries and referrals, ensuring effective management of internal client relationships. Participate in client events and seminars to strengthen relationships, promote the firm, and encourage engagement. Support business development initiatives, including preparation and presentation of new client pitches. Contribute to internal communications, including drafting materials for biweekly meetings and weekly VAT updates. Skills, Knowledge & Expertise Advisory: Experience in managing VAT relationships for clients across a variety of industries. In-depth knowledge of international VAT issues, particularly where one or both parties operate through establishments in multiple jurisdictions. Understanding of property related VAT matters, including experience advising both commercial and not-for-profit clients. Proven ability to review contracts and advise on appropriate and effective VAT wording. Experience dealing with HMRC on a broad range of matters, from routine VAT registrations to complex issues such as disputes, penalties, and reconsiderations of decisions. Experience supporting larger and more complex VAT advisory projects, working collaboratively with senior members of the team. Technical capability in partial exemption special methods and business/non-business apportionment. Ability to identify, assess, and advise on issues arising from VAT assurance visits, inspections, and reviews. Experience conducting VAT health checks and providing pragmatic, risk-based recommendations. Compliance Knowledge: Understanding of VAT compliance requirements, including the preparation and review of VAT returns for businesses of varying size and complexity. Knowledge of VAT registrations, deregistration’s, and VAT grouping/de-grouping processes. Training, Communication & Commercial Awareness: Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients and the ability to generate work both internally and externally through referrals. Experience producing technical and marketing materials on VAT developments, legislative changes, and relevant case law (including UK and EU jurisprudence). Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex VAT issues into clear, practical advice for clients and internal stakeholders.
