Senior Advisor – Chemicals Programme – POPs in Waste - 30778
The Environment Agency is the Competent Authority in England for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Our duties include ensuring POPs in waste are legally managed. We are seeking a technical leader with a regulatory background, especially in waste management, to lead the Environment Agency’s POPs compliance work and deliver our environmental objectives on POPs.
You will provide technical leadership, advise the Government, engage with industry, and steer compliance activities. Excellent influencing and communication skills are essential. You will be supported by the Chemicals Programme, including scientists in our Chemicals Assessment Unit, so familiarity with chemicals is required.
Your responsibilities include designing regulatory approaches based on extensive knowledge of waste streams, chemical waste characterization, and waste management techniques. You will collaborate with EA experts in Waste and Resources teams and compliance teams to ensure adherence to existing POPs restrictions and implement controls on new POPs as they arise. Additionally, you will lead evidence studies for chemicals in waste streams to support regulatory work.
The role involves acting as the technical lead on evidence studies, which is complex and challenging, offering opportunities to enhance your profile and skills. Some travel and overnight stays are required (typically monthly), including potential international travel outside of normal hours.
We value diversity and inclusivity and welcome flexible working arrangements. The team is dispersed nationwide, with a hybrid working model combining office and home working.
Experience/Skills Required
Essential:
* Experience working in the waste sector, preferably in a regulatory capacity.
* Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with confidence in communication.
* Experience of collaborative work within or across organizations.
* Proven problem-solving skills using evidence to shape priorities and work programs.
Desirable:
* Familiarity with working with government bodies at national or local levels.
* Experience in project management and procurement, with support available for project activities.
Development opportunities and training will be provided.
Additional Information
The role can be based at any EA office with a dispersed team and hybrid working. Regular travel and international work may be required. We support flexible working and are committed to diversity and inclusion, including guaranteed interviews for disabled applicants.
