Overview
Are you a skilled engineer ready to take on a dynamic, field-based role in the rail freight sector?
Join a team that keeps the UK’s freight wagons moving with precision, safety, and speed. As an On-Call Fitter, you’ll respond to urgent call-outs, perform scheduled maintenance, and ensure wagons are safe, reliable, and ready for action.
Responsibilities
* Diagnose and repair faults on freight wagons
* Respond to emergencies including derailments and brake issues
* Carry out inspections and scheduled maintenance
* Support technical operations during on-call hours
* Collaborate with terminal staff and train operators
Qualifications
What You’ll Bring:
* NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
* Full UK driving licence
* Fault-finding and repair experience
* Strong communication and IT skills
* Willingness to work unsociable hours and travel
Desirable Extras
* HNC/HND or NVQ Level 4
* Knowledge of brake systems, couplers, and running gear
* PTS or equivalent site access certification
Additional Information
Full training (12–16 weeks), tools, and PPE provided.
Work in a supportive team of two during on-call shifts.
